The first big snows of the 2014 New Zealand Ski Season have prompted the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council to warn of moderate risk for the Mount Cook area.

NZ Mountain Safety Council wrote:SAT pm--The is a forecast DANGER LEVEL of MODERATE above 2200m. This is from slab avalanches formed at ridgeline on or near the main divide in the lee of the strong N-W winds . Avalanche slopes will be smooth fattish slopes in the lee of the wind. These would be slopes to test or completely avoid if you are unsure of what to look for. Below 2000m the DANGER forecast is MODERATE and there could be possible slab avalanches on or near the main divide. Avalanches would be on steep leeward slopes at ridgeline. Again these would be slopes to test or completely avoid if you are unsure of what to look for.
