A 16-year-old perished yesterday in an avalanche in Lech am Arlberg.

A group of four - a guide with a father and twin sons - were skiing off-piste / touring in the area of Madloch-Fauler Stock.

It appears that a slab avalanche caught the guide, the father and one of the sons. According to reports, all four are believed to have been properly equipped - including airbags.

The Avalanche Risk Level is reported to have been 1 (the lowest) at the time.

There is more information here in The Telegraph.

The boy's father, 51, was pulled from the snow alive, but with serious injuries, while the ski instructor who was also buried with the family emerged with light injuries.

Various reports from the region indicate that high winds and variable temperatures have left a combination of poorly bonded snowpack and wind-slabs around the Arlberg - so extreme caution is advised for anyone leaving the piste at present.

As always - take LOCAL advice and heed it.

This is a dreadfully sad reminder that avalanches can, and do, occur at any risk level.

Be careful out there.

Risk level can be so deceiving! Looks like they were totally caught off-guard with 3 people being swept. Sad reminder that at even risk level 1 there can be localised risk higher than this, and caution still has to be exercised.

How sad :(

I suppose it just shows that even highly trained guides can get it wrong sometimes - avalanches can be very difficult to predict
