Hi Brit here, me and my other half would like to go skiing for Christmas, plan is to go the 23rd December until the 29th December, then onto a large city for New Years. Problem is neither of us have been skiing, and December is of course quite early on. So any ideas of where we could go? America, Canada and Europe is preferable. What I want from a ski resort is a variation of slopes, bit of nightlife in the area would be good, maybe a hotel or chalet with a heated pool or private Hot Tub, not asking for much ;-). Any help and advice would be great as we have never been skiing before.

Hi Jaybuoy. Welcome to the forum.

Your geographical area is fairly immense and will pick up the majority of the world's resorts.

Skiing at Christmas will either be expensive or very expensive depending on where you would like to go. An idea of budget would be helpful if you want some useful advice.

Unless you are the new Bode Miller in waiting, variation of slopes should be fairly low down your list of priorities! You ought to be in ski lessons each morning, at least for the 1st half of the week. You are likely to feel pain in new places and by day 6 (if you were like me on my 1st ski hol), you'll be pretty knackered.

Your aspirations regarding après ski will also have a major bearing on the choice of a resort. Some resorts are very quiet, some are full on until way past midnight.

Another consideration is the relatively early time of year. We are likely to be skiing over Christmas and our list is very short - either Val d'Isere or Zermatt. Both have great towns with lots of character, both allow for plenty of high altitude skiing, both are expensive!

In Europe Cervinia consistently has the best early season snow record.

Town atmosphere can't compere to Val or Zermatt though! We like both good skiing and a good town. Hence, the reason we are highly unlikely to return to Les Arcs 1950/2000.

New Year in Zermatt this season was superb. I do accept that it is pricey though......
