Snow depth

Just got back from a week in Bovorets and the snow reports indicated 90cm on the upper slopes - not sure where they took the measurements from but there were very few slopes open, and the upper pistes were very threadbare with grass and stones starting to coming through.
Limited piste grooming leading to some very icy runs. Went with the family who were beginners so there was enough skiing to have enough fun for the week but tough to pay full price for a lift pass when less than 50% of the pistes and lifts were open.

What did you think of the place on the whole? Apart from dodgy snow records are reports fair?

Its these kind of reports that ensure i never give Bulgaria even a quick glance in brochures.

We liked Bovorets as a resort - the town is compact, has an olde world charm and the locals were very friendly. Our hotel was 150m from the lifts so all very convenient. The rep told us that the snow in Bulgaria is not really guaranteed until mid Jan so you do take a risk coming early. We spent Christmas in Bansko last year and there was a dump of snow as we arrived and the skiing was excellent. Price wise it is very competitive compared to the French resorts.

I understand its all 'horses for courses' and the cost is very seductive but im not sure i could ever take that risk.
"Olde World Charm" means 'third world' to me and i simply cant get my head beyond this especially when i watch the George Bar vid.

My first ever skiing trip was to Bulgaria, never again yes it was cheap but you certainly get what you pay for! As a beginner I skied the whole of Bansko in under 3 days then hired a car and drove to Bovorets and skied that in a day.

Bulgaria is a waste of time if you like to ski!!

Mmmmm another dodgy Bulgarian report :shock:

Thats what I heard from so many people, which is why I'd never go.
