Cross country skiing
Started by User in Ski Technique, 4 Replies
Definitely have a go. It's great fun, my first experience of any ski's was cross-country skiing in Northern Ontario when staying with a friend for Christmas. I wouldn't say I was particularly fit but managed a short groomed trail with lots of ups and downs of 4Km reasonably easily. My one piece of advice would be to not to wear to many layers as you use an awful lot of energy. When I went the temps were around -28 and because I wasn't used to this degree of coldness I wore loads of clothes and all my inner clothes were soaking by the time I had finished.

Good luck

Passo Tonale or Bardonecchia

I haven't been to Passo Tonale, but as a skier can recommend Bardonecchia. The price of lift passes and food/drink are reasonable. The snow was great 3 weeks ago and the webcam is showing a good dumping today. All of the boarding events in 2006 winter olympics were held in Bardonecchia, so they have a snowpark and half-pipe although not sure if that is always open. The lift system is good as most are quite new and would give a beginner and more advanced boarders plenty to do. The transfer from Turin is approx 1hr 30. Not sure about night life we only normally have a quick drink after skiing then its dinner at the hotel and bed. for any further info go to http://www.bardonecchiaski.com/

Hi Mekka

Just returned today from Bardonecchia, they currently have great snow conditions and it was snowing lightly this morning as we left. Prices generally are very reasonable €1-€2 for coffee on the mountain depending how you like your coffee. Not really a big drinker but roughly €3.5-5 for a large beer. Paid €4.75 for a 1/4 slice of a large pizza & coffee at the cafe bar near the Ski School at Campo Smith, but as we were half board at our hotel we tended to snack on Snickers bar and cereal bars that we took with us from the UK.

During the week you will find the slopes virtually empty but with good snow it is completely packed on a Saturday and Sunday. There are some lovely cruisy blues and reds, although dependant on your abilities some of the blues can be quite challanging.

When we have unpacked the cameras I will post a couple of current pics.

I have Dare2B jackets and sallos, wore them in Canada in Feb at -20, had just the usual base layers on and they were great didn't feel the cold at all.
Ski servicing cost £££

To add another choice to your list I remembered after my last post, that I saw a notice in the Intersport shop in Doncaster advertising Ski/Board servicing, I can't remember the costs or any other details, but do recall they seemed quite reasonable. I am presuming of course that Intersport are a country wide store, and this service would be available in them all.
