3v current conditions?
Started by User in Ski Chatter, 7 Replies
returned this morning from st martin. first time in 3V and returned somewhat dissapointed!! fantastic ski area but what snow that is there is old and very very icey.
talked to an instructor on the lift and he said there had been no snow to speak of since before xmas and it had been raining since then at top of la masse. best conditions were high in vt. I imagine the piste bashers have had a difficult time with some runs bashed over night but the following night it was clear they had spent time on other runs. unfortunately the pisted runs were crushed ice rather than decent snow so imagine the are would not be much fun for the beginers and the ice that was almost every where would be challenging for anyone but good intermediates. there is another thread on ice which really would tie in with the conditions we have had over the last 6 days. The locals do not believe there is any snow forecast over the next 5 days that would change the conditions. Off piste was tracked and then frozen so that was not much fun and was so looking forward to putting my enduros through their paces that i hired. several blacks were closed and those that were open were very heavily moguled and icey. also some of the greens and blues had grass showing through.. so if you like icey conditions you will love it otherwise have a word with the powers to bring some white fluffy stuff or make sure those edges are in tip top condition.

one thing i should add is that we had blue skys all week so we still had a great week albeit very cold..circa -10 to -15 at higher levels
Guess what!!!

Ski boots - hand baggage or checked in

I think you will find it is different with BA as these are scheduled flights not charter. I travel often with BA and other scheduled ariline flights and they will all, as a general rule, allow 23kg checked and 18kg hand as long as it meets the small suitcase size ( you will need to check on BA for sizes) but i am pretty sure you will get boot bags on as hand luggage or just put them in a smalll suitcase that meets the size requirements for cabin sizes. daughter often flies to the states to and she gets 23kg checked and 18kg hand plus a separate laptop carrier and hand bag - 4 bags total:-)

I find this subject absolutely farcical...I spoke with Thompson airlines yesterday as we are flying to chamberey on saturday and was told that boot bags would be counted as part of your 20kg allowance even if you could get them on the plane so that leaves no option of sepearate hand luggage. In addition to that i was told i would not be able to get the boots on as hand luggage as they are classed as an offencive weapon!!!

This whole weight thing does my head in and i will take things out of my suitcase and wear them to board the plane if challenged about extra weight. I am 85kg plus 20 kg hold and 5 kg hand luggage so my weight on that plane is 110kg..why cant i have the same sum of weight to MrX who is 6'4" and 100kg without any bags?

arrrggghh rant over and sorry to all those who are heavier than me and will be in the check in with me on sat morning
Snow in La Rosiere

Not a snow report but more a comment on the button between La Ros and La Thuile. I stayed in Thuile so it was good to ski over to la ros but that button back to la thuile was not pleasant for the less accomplished skiers. it was 2/3 years ago now but as i recall it was probably best part of 15mins without a stop and now way of getting back on if you came off apart from the start again.having said that if you dont mind the button then it was nice to be able to ski in the 2 resorts. La Ros does have some good runs but i really did enjoy the thuile side particulary in the tree line with a few good blacks.

i have been there several times - stayed in the madeline and crystal sportiv. you will love the area and the pretty village and the nieder hut is an absolute must when the live music is on from about 4 in the afternoon but make sure you either dont have skis with you or you are still able to ski back at night safely. the run is floodlit or maybe even get a lift back down to the village on the owners skido. majority of people are dancing on the tables in ski boots or hanging from the roof beams- honest!!
if you want any info on the area let me know.
