Surely some banging beats are what's needed.... I love my indie like the next man but try some euphoric trance.... it's like shepherds pie sandwiches...

Next season

I'll be here; in the secret that is Jasna, away from those unsavoury Alpine prices....

Borrow as much clothing as you can - you may not like the sport. Also TK Maxx have some excellent ski/board apparel at good prices.

Avoid the crowds simply by going somewhere the crowds don't. Half term is always a tricky one. You only need a tiny resort to learn at and the bigger ones always attract the biggest crowds. France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria and Scandinavia you should rule out simply because of the costs.

Bulgaria is a good cheap option with easy pistes but the food and service can be a bit harsh.

In Slovakia, (two hour flight) there are many small, local hills perfect for beginners in the area around Jasna (a big ski area). I run a chalet there and can easily transport beginners to these little local slopes.

Snowboarding lessons - bad experience

Language barriers are often the problem when it comes to teaching - they don't have the vocabulary to suggest something else. Also schools are often inclined that their clients don't learn too fast in order to maximise lesson expenditure - sad but true.

They key to a good instructor is generally experience. Someone who has only taken the instructors' course, but attained very little mountain time will always be inferior to an wise old 7-seasonnaire....

Next holiday try to arrange it with either a school (+ the actual instructor) that you have had good rep. from, convince an able friend to come along and give you some tips, or try even a chalet that is operated by a 'wise old seasonnaire' and arrange lessons that way.

Check the indoor place for deals; they can be expensive. Also have a chat with your potential instructor before you pay; to get a vibe from him/her.

- Don't give up; we all went thru the initial day of sliding out of control onto our backsides....

St. Anton.....any good advice??

Because you are going so late you should be able to get a bargain. Scan the web for cheap deals or even wait till you get there and door knock - I know this may seem hassle but you will be surprised what you may be offered...

Canada Vs. Europe...

I think you will also find digs and jobs easier in N. America than in Europe. As you probably know, seasonnaires normally end up in dingy apartments (unless they are loaded), odd-jobbing.

The fewer people in the N.A resorts and your accent (don't underestimate the power of an educated British voice) will open more doors than you thought possible...

To Ski or Board??? :?

I would advise boarding if you are concerned about injury.... purely on the relative chances odds.

Knee aggravations are a lot more common in skiing than in boarding.
