Tony H, stayed in a catered chalet in Plagne 1800 a few years ago and really enjoyed it. Was early December so no snow at 1800 but it was my 2nd trip there having stayed in Aimee La Plagne before that. I really enjoyed skiing there. Seem to remember there were a few bars in 1800 and a reliable bus service if no snow to chalet. Enjoy where ever you end up :)

Getting Worried about the No Snow Show

I had an 8 year gap before starting skiing again last season, ended up taking 4 beginners with us who we tried hard to convince that no this is not the norm, no it's not usual for it to be 13 degrees at the top of the DMC in Flaine and yes we should be trudging thru Les Carroz in the snow not trying to avoid standing on the flowers.
So here I am a year later going back to Les Carroz on 9th March with the same people (clearly not put off) and praying the snow is good. Thanks for the chart admin, I am now convinced it is going to dump before we go (still won't stop me checking every 5 mins though). I had completely forgotten how stressful waiting to go skiing is. |

Thanks for the reply Tony! It's true about the cheap flights, I did a quick search for the week we are skiing in France in March and they were 1p each way from Stansted, with taxes it only came to £22 return each. Bit of a hassle getting to Stansted as we're oop north in Yorkshire but would still work out cheaper.
Thanks again :) |

Thanks Colin for a more up to date view on it, it's been one of those resorts I loved when I went with school and wanted to go back to.
I think a great advantage to Isola, especially in March would be the weather? It's so far south that I imagine it will be sunnier than most being so close to the Med. To be honest, I've realised you don't actually need that many bars, it's the atmosphere that counts. We are going to Les Carroz in a few weeks and from what I remember of Isola 2000, Les Carroz is smaller and yet we still manage to cram a fair few drinks in and most of the bars don't shut til way after midnight. I believe there is even a nightclub in Les Carroz although I've yet to need/find it! You'll have a great time, reply to this message when you get back and let us know what you thought of it. Hi, I put this question in here because the Eastern Europe section didn't seem to have much traffic so apologies admin and move if you see fit.
Question is, has anyone skied in Maribor? If so, what's it like? My cousin and partner bought a house out there and are currently doing it up, they're not skiers but bought it cos they fell in love with the country and I only found out the other day that it's only half an hour from Maribor at the moment and with a new motorway currently being built will eventually be only 15 min drive from the slopes. They've said we can use it for free when we like (bit like camping inside at the moment though!) but next season was thinking of maybe a weeks skiing? I know it's fairly low altitude but for only a flight plus ski costs etc could be a good deal? Any tips/info would be greatly appreciated :) Thanks! Ally |

Hi, I felt like I had to reply since no one else did! Went to Isola 2000 with school years ago which probably doesn't help you and can't remember much except we had a fab ski in ski out apartment and the nightlife was pretty good although was only 16 at the time and seem to remember spent a lot of time pretending to go to bed only to get caught buying drinks at a bar later on ;) I also seem to remember that they served smaller bottles of beer to the supermarket so when I tried to smuggle them into the bar in my salopettes they realised.
Anyway I'm 33 now and have learnt my lesson but still remember Isola 2000 fondly which again doesn't help you! Anyway, I seem to remember it had enough nightlife to satisfy a bunch of 16-18 year olds and quite a few 30 something teachers who swore they'd just been to the payphone ;) Enjoy :) |

You may well do Souldrive, it's not a huge place although we're arriving Sunday aft and I believe you go back the next day.
Sunday tea time we'll probably be found in Marlow's bar in the village centre drinking copious amounts of their fine local wine in earthenware jugs and we'll be the 4 couples looking very pale and interesting in civvy clothes with no injuries counting the hours til our first day back on the slopes :) |

If you like traditional French villages then you'll love Les Carroz. Going 9th March for the 2nd year running. Great little bars, restaurants and very friendly people. If we managed to fall in love with it last year with rubbish snow then it should be fantastic with proper snow coverage. It's really easy to ski over to Flaine too providing the wind isn't strong enough to render the lifts closed. They also have very frequent free ski buses that go from the bottom of the telecabine to all the surrounding areas in case you're not right in the centre (check the destinations though, don't do an hour long tour of the area like we did!).
Don't know whether you are hiring your gear or not but if you are it would be worth looking at booking online with Skilimanjaro (in the centre of the village) as we managed to get huge discounts (25% off 8 sets of skis) and last year they provided excellent service (no I don't work for them!). Have a great time! I can almost taste my first tartiflette and vin chaud ;) |
