Les Deux-Alpes or Trois Vallees?
Started by User in France, 9 Replies
Hi -

I'm looking forward to my annual ski pilgrimage (mid-late January) to Europe. Last year, I spent a very nice week in Chamonix, and this year I'm trying to decide where to go. When I travel, I like to experience different mountains each day, so I'm considering either big areas such as Les Deux-Alpes or Trois Vallees.

A little bit about me - I'm a fairly advanced, all-mountain skier, but I particularly enjoy long, fast, cruising runs. I'm not terribly interested in night life, but I do like good restaurants. Finally, I'll be flying into Geneva and will be renting a car.

Given all of the above, can anyone provide any recommendations about a good, multi-faceted, multi-mountain area?

Many thanks for your insight!

Hotel for Chamonix January 2013

Hi -

I've got my flights booked from the US to Geneva for late January 2013, and I'm giving serious consideration to visiting Chamonix for the first time. I've found some nice hotels, but they've got pretty stringent cancellation policies, so I'm wary of reserving the hotel now. Instead, I'm thinking about waiting to book my hotel (for a Saturday night to the following Saturday morning) until about 10 days before my trip. That will give me the option of diverting to a different area in Switzerland or Italy if snow conditions are poor in France.

For those with experience in the Chamonix area, do you think that it will be likely that there will be "last minute" hotel availability for that time period?

Thanks in advance!
Skiing in Verbier in mid March 2012?
Started by User in Switzerland, 8 Replies
Hi -

I may have an opportunity to ski in Verbier (my first visit there) for 3 days (March 15-17) this year. I was lucky enough to ski the Jungfrau region in mid January earlier this year, and conditions were fantastic.

However, from what I can see of the weather forecast it looks like things are getting quite warm in Switzerland right now. I also know that there's a really good snow base built up, so I'm not worried about much melting between now and mid March. I'm more concerned about soft, mushy pistes by the time I visit.

Does anyone (especially Swiss residents or frequent skiers) have any thoughts about this? Is mid-March still a good time to visit, especially given how much snow you've had this year?

Thanks!

Robert

p.s. To save CHF, I plan on staying in Martigny and taking the train up each day. Does that seem like a good idea?
