Skiing in Verbier in mid March 2012?
Started by User in Switzerland, 8 Replies
Hi All,

I am also in the 4 Valleys in a week's time (weekend of 17th March), staying near Thyon.

I definitely want to ski Verbier, but wonder whether it is better to Ski over from Thyon, or drive around. Any thoughts?

Also, any thoughts on good offpiste available nearer Thyon? Obviously given conditions currently, the warnings on safety etc will be well heeded!

thanks
geds.
Off-piste in Kitzbuhel

Hi Grizwald,
So Kitzbuhel turned up ok but not without frustration..
Had a good couple of days in fresh powder (and bad weather) including a great half day guided in Fieberbrunnen (guide was Ottmar from the local ski school - very happy with him). We had 60cm fresh powder at the bottom of the mountain - top was closed due to avalanche risk.. Then just as the weather started to clear with a meter of fresh powder, I came down with my worst case of the flu for years!
I would definitely recommend Fieberbrunnen.. Relaxed, great off piste, cheaper than kitzbuhel.
Looking forward to making up for lost time next weekend in Wengen/Murren.. Any tips on good off piste options from this group gratefully received!
Thanks again,
Geds.

Thanks Grizwald!

I have done some research online (probably should have started with that).. and apparently Fieberbrunn which is 30 minutes drive away is fantastic off piste skiing and is a natural powder trap.
Also the area to the side of Kitzbüheler Horn (forget the actual name) is currently being redeveloped and they are providing snow cat based trips up the mountain for free riding enthusiasts.
Hope you have a good time. The temperatures are still cold (as you probably know) but are scheduled to get a little less so over the coming week.

Any further recommendations on good guides, or people who have been recently would be gratefully received!

Cheers,
Geds.

Hi All,

Heading to Kitzbuhel for almost a week beginning 12th February and wanted to check options for good off piste skiing.

Interested in current/forecast snow conditions, best areas for resort accessed off piste skiing (no touring set up currently), and recommendations for guides (and potentially heli options).

I am advanced level (skiing since i was 3).

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Best,
Geds.
I find each country's skiers reflect their national culture -
Swiss - highly technical, controlled and a bit restrained
Italian - totally unrestrained, fast and passionate, but the food and laughter makes up for it all...
Austrian - very friendly, warm hearted - but highly serious about skiing and, on average, the best technical skiers i have seen..
French and Nth America - afraid to say I haven't skied there
New Zealand - totally relaxed, but rugged can do, go anywhere philosophy.

decide which you like and i think you'll find the mountains to suit!
