I really wouldn't recommend waiting to the last minute for accommodation during French and British half-term. Also you'll probably have to bring your own linen. As Admin says, with the snow the way it is, people will be booking up. I doubt you'll make any savings if you can even find anywhere as you will be charged rack rate as a drive-up.
Cross Country skiing Pyrenees/Cevennes

Hi There. If you are west of Montpellier then the Pyrenees would be your best bet. There is a small resort in the Cevennes near Mont Aigoual but they are still waiting for snow http://www.pratpeyrot.fr.

I'm afraid I don't know the Pyrenean resorts, but it looks like the closest ones are in the Pyrenees Orientales. Les Angles,
or Font Romeu and Bolquere Pyrenees 2000 seem fairly close.
Gloves

Best gloves I've bought are the gloves worn by the lifties in France. Cheap leather gloves. They are very good value. They do need waterproofing when you first get them, but they are lovely and warm lambskin and fleece. In France they only come in in vibrant yellow, but Snowshepherd sell them in black as well. Combined with silk liners you'll be toasty warm. Never forget that a warm core is vital to keeping hands and feet warm. The French version are called venitex and only cost about euro15.

It's easy to get caught out. In Italy, there are also problems with adulterated fuel (watered down by the Mafia apparently).
