Hi - I know how you feel- I also have had ACL reconstruction - I ski again but not with great confidence. But take heart my friend fell after skiing over a broken bottle and needed both ACL doing one three months after the other, this was 1 year after having spine fusion , and at the same accident as the knees she broke 3 ribs avoiding the glass. She was skiing again this year and again although cautious she did better than me. I have another friend who was knocked out by a border and broke collar bone and pelvis in 2 places, 2 years later someone took her out getting of a chair, and she broke pelvis again and shoulder- and guess what she is also back skiing- It is the most depressing time after a ski injury but I am same age as you - tings do take longer to heal but it will get better and in a couple of seasons you will be back out there.
Hello - I know skiing with kids can be expensive - and our enforced ski break lasted 20 years , until we took the bull by the horns and decided we just had to afford it ! our first visit was to Bulgaria - Borovets , which our 3 children loved as this was their first ski trip - we however knew that there was much better if we could afford it. So we bought 2 timeshares - one New Year week , and one a floating Easter week , both in Zell am See in Austria, where we started our Austrian love affair. Our kids enjoyed 2 holidays each season , and I still have one of those timeshares which I use to exchange for other destinations . This is because I now live in Austria, have a business here and would like to help you if you wanted to contact me.
You mention your 3 year old - My grandson was here to visit me in January , he is 3, and joined ski school on Sunday - not too happily I might add - and on Friday he very happily skied 15km , with his ski group, and then proudly asked if I was impressed. I know all kids are different, but don't block out the possibility of ski school altogether as certainly in our village their is excellent instruction for little ones, and also a kindergarden for non skiing tots. This is obviously going to take up a bit of your budget , but it is a real long term investment and worth it if you can afford it.
I am located just 1 hour from Salzburg airport- I too am based in the North of uk, but generally travel from Stanstead as it offers more choice and flights in the week. I say this because in January/Mid March I am open to offering non Saturday arrivals, so this can reduce the flight cost, and is less busy. Sunday is a good option !
Car hire is quite cheap, and the drive is easy and quick. Public transport is also available but when you are 4, it is nearly as good to rent a car.
My apartments are well equipped and offer you all the home comforts, close to the lift, and within walking distance of the supermarket. Rental is arranged through our trusted partner in the village , who gives great care and attention, plus 10% discount to our guests. Children up to 6 get free skis and boots when 1 adults rent.
In Mid March to end of season , kids up to mid teens will get free ski passes when an adult buys a 3 day or more pass , but little ones are free anyway throughout the season.
It is absolutely best if possible to avoid school holidays, as this is much quieter all round for both you an the kids- and of course sadly soon you will be spending the next few years tied to school calendars and airlines who hike up the price like crazy to cash in on families with children . Unlike package tour companies, my prices are not increased at school holidays,we have low,mid and high season prices but generally there is a 5/6 week higher price plus Xmas and New Year.
The snow record in my village is excellent, and we enjoy a unique micro-climte here, with many North facing slopes holding the snow until well into Mid April- so good for late Easter holidays when school restrictions start.
I would be more than happy to offer you further help if you were interested - I understand the need for a holiday with a tight budget, and try and offer the best value possible, without being a cheap package option . Please feel free to ask questions , and I hope I can help you. www.austriaskiapartments.com Nadia Race
When to book Christmas 2013?

Sorry Dave - thats the problem you worked for them a hundred years ago - so to speak. I live in Leogang , and our resort has changed this year- no advance warning , just changed by all 3 ski schools with the arrival of their brochures pre Xmas.
In Zell they have changed - although they have faced more difficulties and opposition because there are tour op's involved in selling ski school, which has been advertised in brochures printed long before the decision to change was made. There has been some U turns on that decision this season due to pressure , but there is a move to change. You say its not in anyones interest - it is , the ski schools are doing a lot more private lessons now, which is very much in their interest, as the income is far higher. You may of course be correct about the ski school you mention, but Carmel should check because you cant guarantee that it will stay that way

Take care - I know of 2 resorts where they have changed the ski school hours to 10 - 12.30 daily !!
more could follow next season if word gets around that they can get away with it. You will need to check with each resort , and at the moment some may not even have made a decision
Austria 6th April

 Thanks Ade - PS its snowing again - spring has gone to bed for a while. The Super Salzburg Lift pass will cover you for 22 resorts throughout Salzburgerland and also Kitzbuhel. You can ski the Kaprun Glacier too, so even if you stay locally you can travel it to Karin should you need to. Its true it takes a while to get up there in the mornings, and as you get into Spring conditions elsewhere it gets busy. However it is great for the odd day , but can be boring over a full holiday. As Ade has said to you Leogang slopes face North and keep hold of great conditions as long as possible. A coupel of years ago when easter was late we were the only resort in this area still open till 28th April ( other than the Glacier). Our lifts this year close on the 14th April.

wwwobb.at - for the local bus/train service . Bus which costs about €14 one way per person or Train for 2 persons on an Einfach Raus ticket is €32 one way but you can only use this on regional trains.
Otherwise www.holiday-shuttle.at for group daily shuttle buses at regular times, cost € 40 one way ( I think )
Austrian Tourist Tax

Hi
Tourist tax is collected per night per person 14 years of age and above. The rate is not the same in each resort but is around €1.20 to € 1.60. It is sometimes included in the rental cost and as in our case we add it on per person per night because it is not known how many chidren are in a group we could be over or undercharging. Ade stayed with us and paid € 1.40 per night for 2 people. It is very important that we register each guest, as this is a tax we have to pay. Only this morning the " guest registration inspector " called at 9am to check who is booked in this week and who is actually registered. There is a large fine if we do not register. Our registrations ( Leogang ) are done online, but in Zell most are still done manually . It is wrong for the charge to be so high and if I were youI would book elsewhere - or call/email the tourist office to check .
