One day skiing from Zurich

Within 2 hours train/bus you are limited to lower altitude options, but should be snow sure. For good open slopes, groomers and closeness to Zurich, Flumseberg is a good option, very convenient. hooch y Brig is similar. Elm is lesser known, probably still in that travel time and has a nice, more local, feel.
Engelberg is a great field, high altitude - up to 3000 meters (Might be longer than 2 hours train? Not sure)...stunning scenery, but better for advanced and off piste - still great options on piste, but it is a powder heaven.
Another similar option with more groomed options would be Flims Laax, or Klosters - very extensive and good travel connections.
Enjoy!

Thanks NellyPS -

Yes, we are planning to get a guide and do the Vallee Blanche. Recommendations on a good guide anyone?

Hi All,

I am off to Chamonix for a week beginning next monday (11th February). First time there, and looking forward to some good offpiste skiing.

Any specific recommendations on parts of the resort (i know it's pretty extensive), or current conditions (lots of snow in the forecast!) would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Geds.
Anyone any advice for Klosters/Davos

Hi,

If you are concerned about grocery prices then I would recommend a visit to Aldi on your way to the mountains. Their prices are ~30% cheaper than the Migros and Coop alternatives so you can pick up the basics there. Check locations en route online.

As for the skiing, I haven't yet been to Davos/Klosters this season, but generally there is plenty of scope. According to SLF.ch they had around 25-30 cm on the 28th, so hopefully the conditions are better than the report above mentions! Be cautious buying lunches on the mountain, F&B on the mountains in Switzerland quickly add up to more than your lift pass - so if you are watching the $$ be willing to pack some power bars and drinks in a day pack.

Good that you will have a car. Within 30-40 minutes of Klosters you are in range of Lenzerheide and Flims-Laax which are both world class resorts and are worth exploring if you are not happy with the conditions around Davos Klosters. Check J2Ski for conditions.

Have fun, it is a remarkable valley - very beautiful, so even if the skiing is cr*p (which I very much doubt), you can be inspired by the views!

Hi all,

I have bookings in Kitzbuhel on the 4th and 5th of January, but am looking for a good location near challenging skiing for nights preceeding this (flexible on number of nights).

Websites are showing no availability, anyone know of good options?

Thanks,

Inside information on Montafon...
Started by User in Austria, 3 Replies
Hi there,

We were looking at spending some time in Montafon in Austria next season (2012/13).

I am a advanced skier with a love for skiing off piste, and my family are intermediate, but like a challenge when the conditions are good (ski reds happily and blacks in good conditions).

For anyone who has been to Montafon -
- is there a good variety of terrain (something for all of us)
- is there good off piste skiing?
- how easy is it to link to other resorts nearby (Lech, St Anton, Ischgl etc)
- is it a pleasant resort (not a big apres ski guy, but good restaurants and bars are always a bonus!).

thanks in advance for any tips..

Protecting ski edges in Summer!!

Thanks for the tip about the 'wipes' Pavelski... one question, is the rust inhibitor safe to come in contact with the bases, or do you need to be very careful to not treat the bases as well.

thanks,

Skiing in Verbier in mid March 2012?

verbier_ski_bum wrote:Well, if you drive around it will take some time, but then you are not risking being stuck on the wrong side. But generally skiing across is a better option (mind you, last season it was a royal pain due to horrific conditions). As for off-piste nearer Thyon you'll see when you are there. I skied in the area during the big freeze and it was mostly tracked out and bumped up. With no snow worthy of mentioning and none expected I don't think it got any better. I also think that some slopes have already avalanched during couple realy warm weeks as there were many full-depth cracks. There is an itinerary from the top of Greppon Blanc to which you can get fairly easy from Thyon by taking some drag lifts. But it will be very bumpy. For more you better take a local guide. To be honest I don't think you'll be able to find any powder fields or good snow unless you are prepared to tour quite far afield or there will be some major change in weather.

Thanks for this, looking forward to the sun if not the snow!
