Not Cornish - just corny... (sorry) Don't know about the roots in detail. But I'm supposed to be 3/4 Irish and 1/4 Welsh. Most grandparents came from Ireland during the potato famine days to Cape Breton (northern part of NS) and The Edwards settled closer to Halifax. Truro is about a 55 minute drive from my home just outside Halifax. Look closely at your map Ellistine. Slightly north of Truro is Wentworth - the location of Ski Wentworth -another 30 minutes from Truro. Some really nice trails there and the only black diamond hills nearby. They usually get "The Headwall" operational but the other 2 depend on a snowfall. Their site has a gallery showing this. The first time down the Headwall when my wife and I were riding back up on the chair - patting ourselves on the back for this accomplishment .... some kid was travelling down headwall - backwards Find Windsor near the center of the province and just slightly west you will see Martock. Ski Martock is 44 minutes from my driveway to theirs. We try to leave at 7:45 on Saturday mornings to give us time to get the boots on and to the the first chair at 9am. Gee this makes me long for the winter Saturday mornings :( I had left out before that the '94 trip included a day to Chester in Wales. Now that's a neat place! A real tourist trap too! We would really like to someday charter one of the river boats and make that run. Have you toured Chester and walked the wall or visited the Cathedral ? Some real history there! We seldom take advantage of the features of where we live. It is the same here. No new numbers :?: :shock: When do you leave for Cornwall :?: Mike :) :roll: |

The model of the ski usually has a number attached indicating the stiffness as well. The Atomic supercross SX 9 is slightly less stiff than the SX 10 as with the Solomon Crossmax Pilot 10 or Pilot 9. The problem with the serial # is challenging the person who found your missing (misplaced) ski that you would like to take a look at the serial #. But then the tuning shops usually have an eye out for these "misplaced" skis with a list at their bench. Another number I remember is the sequence of turns and numbers on my combination lock which helps me from misplacing my skis from the racks. OK -- so I'm not so trusting I suppose.... And Ellistine we have parts of Canada that have the independance feelings too. Not sure where Pavel stands on this one - can be a sensitive issue at times. But then NS has had promises from people who wanted to use the shale layering beneath the province to act as a means of floating the entire province down to Florida. Now wouldn't that mess up our ski season !!! Mike :? |

No, I haven't been to Cornwall and I certainly wouldn't insult anyone from there. My slip of the key board - sorry. I meant with all the internet cafes all over the place you should be able to find a connection while visiting. The 1994 trip saw visits to Blackpool and area (town & country tour- which went through Wyre on yesterday's bank holiday - as I remember), the Lake District and London. In 1997 another trip to the UK took us to Belfast, Port-a-Ferry (we stayed at a B&B in Bangor), then onto London with a trip to Brighton . Both trips had to include Windsor. Great trips both times!! Have a great time in Cornwall, Ellistine ! Now skiing in Austria must have been better than great !!! Bet you have some other good stories besides driving the nail! Mike :-) |

But, Ellistine .... they must have internet connections in Cornwall. When you relax a bit I bet the numbers will just "float" into your mind. This has been so much fun and challenging at the same time. That bring up another "f-index" number - the float index indicating how well a given ski profile will "float" over the snow. It is a relative number based on a standard (which I would have to look up) but for my Head Big Easy skis with a 12.4@160 the f-index is 122. As I recall (correctly or not - not sure) there is a certain ski designated as the industry standard and this ski's base area is 122% of the standard. Something along this line, I believe. Now gentlemen, my wife, Judy, has always been enchanted by the Pavel Quizz and has on occasion also provided a "respect"ful answer regarding how a woman wants her man to "listen". With this quizz she has asked me to offer an answer on her behalf - and I always "listen" to my wife's wishes. Judy suggests the numbers relating to a happy, safe, and money saving ski venture are: 555-6789; a home phone number when needing assistance (emergency or otherwise 235-765-008; government health card number for an unexpected visit to the ER room with a ski related injury ABF-409; Your car liscence plate number for easy finding of the car by ski hill officials after you have been whisked to the ER room. (She seems to have a expectation of injury !!) *** *** ** *** Bank Card number (Sorry the actual digits are her secret) just in case she needs unexpected finances while out of commission. 623-887-6-3425; Private health Card Number - so that any hospital care the government won't cover her private insurance might. She needs her comforts! Now you see why my first reply included the time for lunch and warming by the lodge fire ... Judy like's her comforts. Mike :wink: |

And one more reply before I try to dream another (but short) answer ...
Pavel says to think like him. And the way he thinks is in a way for which he can prepare for the unexpected. He once told me a story of a young boy who watched the elders go out hunting. Being young and lacking hunting skills, the boy had to say behind; but one day he went off on his own - and failed at his hunt. He failed because he wasn't prepared properly. Pavel likewise prepares mindfully for what lies ahead and hopes to be prepared for the unknown - it is a matter of survival !! He puts himself in the position of keeping a watchful eye and has a ready course of action. He is a rather amazing guy !!! Really !!! But how to turn this into numbers that are magical and all this important. ?? A difficult question. He once pointed out the importance of planning for future needs to me. And the signifiigance of the tree. And he says the three of us are rounding the tree! Another "hidden" clue? Just as the letter was "hidden' in the house? I wonder. And "its all about the skis"! And just how will these numbers save all this money? More questions than answers I guess. This is deep but likely very plain to see.. So when we assess our needs and plan for the future when it comes to buying skis for the best deal we look to April for the purchase - the down season when the suppliers are trying to sell off stock. Here we will save money! 4 = April If we assess our abilities and the terrain in which we hope to ski we can find the ski that works the best for us and produce the "performance" of a highly powered car. Here we select the size specifications of the ski. Even the pitch of the terrain has a bearing on ski length. 11 @ 165 for example (since we have Mutix on the brain) 11 being the turning radius in meters and 165 being the ski length in cm. If we select our skis for the conditions we expect to find at the ski hill we will not be suprised and caught un-prepared. Lets suppose we are going a great distance and could find icy conditions, powder conditions, hard packed conditions or a mixture. We want to be ready for the unexpected!! 3 = The number of skis we would like to have to suit a variety of conditions. Pavel has been known to prepare 10 pairs of skis for family ski outings to Sunday River - but you didn't hear this from me! For peace of mind in the event of stolen .. or let's say ... misplaced skis, recording the serial number of our skis might help make the recovery possibly. 0001264538 = a serial number on the ski (we would keep this number with us as well as in other safe places). The number which would help make the skiing experience more pleasant is knowing we have our ski de-tuned properly. This will prevent catching an edge resulting in a potential nasty fall. 5 = the distance from tip and tail we detune the skis in cms and remove any burrs. And now I'm off to dream of how Pavel would answer this quizz since he says he knows the answer!!! Mike :wink: |

Pavel,
Oh this is getting really intresting now !!! And we haven't even reached the point where "The DaVinci Code" comes into the equation.... So since we are all loosing sleep and you suggest, Pavel, "Mike you know me better than the others. Think like me! You are the very best to get this one! Let me see if you have a good memory!" Let's just call it a draw and we could all vote Mike as the winner !!! :-) There is no doubt that many things you found impressive about me ...My sense of humor for sure !!! My luck in finding such a great wife !!! My naive thinking of the value of candle wax !!! - well maybe the impressive thoughts left at this point ... But as I recall you were impressed by my observation powers at the time you donated a tuning machuine to the race team at Lake Placid and they in turn made a gift of Rossignol skis to you. You had sent me a picture of the skis in your car and I noted the Rossi symbol which you seem to find impressed that I could see. But now how does this all tie togethern now??? Hmmmmmm????? What 5 numbers would Pavel think this important and this magical ??? I realized from the outset of this quizz that the winner would be the one who was able to think most like you So I will take some time and review the posts, while thinking like Pavel. Then I will again load the shotgun and blast another answer out for all to see. Unless the others beat me to it. Get ready for another reply from me!!! Mike :!: :wink: |

Dshenberger [My guess is: we will all be stunned at the simplicity of this! After all how hard can it be if 95% of all good skiers know it? ;)] I agree - this is usually the way it goes!! Good point !!!! [ He just likes to give us beginners a a hard time. ;)] I see you know our great mentor - the true teacher- Pavel quite well!!! He enjoys bringing the answer out from within our basic knowledge. [So, here is my list, (I feel bad jumping in this late:)] Never feel bad about joining the Great Pavel Springtime Quizz aka: The Sleepless Night Club It's good to know Ellistine and myself aren't alone in the quest for these great skis! The more in the quizz, the sooner we get the answer and all can return to restful nights! Mike :D |

Ellistine;
{I can think of lots of things to consider when buying new skis but I can't make these into a number;} Sure you can turn these things into numbers ... I hope you're not valuing quality sleep time as more value than the great Pavel sleepless night inducing quizz.!! Just think how much longer the ski season has continued... look at how we have put so much thought into this and the things we have learned. OK .. take a nap ... and then come up with some matching numbers!!! These skis are well worth some lost sleep right now... you can sleep all summer and be rested up for some quality ski time in the Alps !!! The quizz continues .... Mike :P |
