Glacier skiing safety
Started by User in Avalanche Safety, 4 Replies
Hi all,

Some of you may be interested in this short video on skiing & boarding safely on glaciers put together by myself and IFMGA Mountain Guide Andy Perkins.
This is a 'silent' edit produced originally for the Compagnie du Mont Blanc, who will be showing it on the info screens around Chamonix this winter.

Enjoy

*Note* This is not an instructional video, but simply highlights the risks, and ways to minimise these... we accept no responsibility for anyone's health & well-being while skiing/boarding on glaciers...!
Nordic Skiing in Champagny

Good cross country for beginners (+ up to 17 km black trail) in Champagny-le-Haut. There's normally a free shuttle bus for X-countriers from Champagny itself. Ask at the Tourist Office for instruction, or else at the Kiosk/Info centre for the tracks. Kit easy to hire in Champagny & cheap.

Chances are very slim that you would be able to ski all the way down to Champagny by 2nd week in April - village is quite low & south facing, but should be fine skiing back to top of bubble (for beginners this is the best option anyway..
Depending on which way you go there are mellow blues back from LP to the top of the Champagny bubble..

Carving Tuition - Has to be seen!!!

Best bit is the section starting at 1'35". (Tip - watch the background action...)
If standing on the side of a steep hill, would your feet be together? No!!
Alternatively if the gradient is less steep, we bring our feet closer together, and narrow our stance.

However one has to bear in mind there are 2 components - horizontal & vertical - ie, standing with your feet 1 foot horizontally apart on the flat, your feet will be closer than standing with your feet 1 foot horizontally apart on a 45º slope as there is now extra separation (vertical).

Same stance width, but overall foot separation is different...
