Magic Numbers all skiers should know!

ellistine wrote:Technology for you. I'm on a sunbed by a hot tub in a hotel in Cornwall reading this damn thread on my mobile phone!

i've pretty much resigned myself to not getting these skis (anyway I like my skis) and it's lovely not to have to be constantly thinking about numbers.

each time Pavel gives us another hint I get even more confused!

still it's single handedly kept this forum functioning these last few weeks!

when I get home i'll have another read of pavels hints but at the moment i'm baffled.

Ellistine; It sounds like you're having a good time ... sunbeds, hottubs... and I'm happy for you. We all deserve some quality down time now and then. Don't give up on this yet... the correct answer will likely come from someone who is silently lurking and going to pounce with that magic number right at the "magical" moment and BOOM ... Pavel will have to ship the skis to Italy !!! We are only up to page # 6 . The London bookeis are probably taking action on the page number when that lurking person from Italy pounces and closes the 2007 Quizz! But we will greet the winner with a polite "Comie stie?" none the less --- because we skiers are such nice people!

But I agree ... the more hints - the more confused I am as well. But deep down we all would love to take "ownership" of the great skis. For two reasons. 1. They are obviously beautiful skis and like a kid in a candy store we want it all! and 2. We can claim bragging rights as the winner of the 2007 Pavel Springtime Quizz! Thereby it would be like the skier who conquers White Heat at Sunday River. Pavel must relate the story (and reasoning) for a colourfully decorated tree on that run. The people who have decorated it are saying "I've made it - show me my seat at the table of the skiers of the inner sanctum"! And the simmilar thing can be said of surviving a Pavel Quizz let alone claiming to be a winner !!!

Lots of reasons not to give up. Numbers are with you too. Don't stay in the sun bed longer than ---- minutes and get out of the hottub after -----minutes .... Just can't escape the numbers in life. But have a great time anyway :D

cya

I don't recall seeing that mentioned Agusl. It ties into the DIN but I don't think anyone mentioned anything in that area.

My wife suggested this morning that possibly 2 and 3 may be a couple of the magic numbers. As in ..."turn..2...3..." ..."turn...2 ... 3..." We USE 2 & 3 to keep our turns rythymic and smooth as we turn the skis from arc to arc down the hill! When it works right ... well.. it's magical !!! "Say it like you would sing it !! ..."turn..2...3..." , ..."turn..2...3..."

pavelski wrote:You have really created a real problem for me!

What do I do if correc6t answer is found in ALL your answers.

Do we do a "time sharing" ski deal, where I send ski to X for two months. Then to Y for 5 weeks!

Have you all read each other"s answers? You have great brain power as a group!

Mike, think how proud yu were when you told me and the end of the ski year how you........ ( in figures)

Damm I am getting too close to the answer!

Others will complain that you are getting "unfair" information!

Mind you I wish Ellistine wins so that he can "tell" other skiers what it feels like to ski on a "hot" ski! Come on just a few more sleepless nights Ellistine. You have the answer. You think of this all the time! Now just present your thinking into a "figure"!

I promise you all this figure you will never forget and you will use it for the rest of your skiing life! It will be called the Pavel index!

Damm another hint!!! Can't seem to hold them back! Must be the sleepless nights thinking of all of you!

Here is my very last hint!

Once you know this figure and HOW TO USE IT correctly you become in your country the man to see! They will come to you!

They will ask you if.........!

PS
I have already checked how much it costs to ship skis to England! So get it!!!!!

With each reply from Pavel the hints become more enticing and even more confusing.

But I'm on the way out the door right now but wanted to offer just as strange a "guess" or two.

It seems we are missing one number which will be called the "Pavel index " or PI and we all know PI = 3.14159265375.. or about 22/7. It is used to calculate the properties of circles and since we ski arcs, I suppose we use this to save time as we can estimate the arc we will ski knowing PI and the specifications of our skis. But I have offered PI as an answer already!

And the second guess is that the number we all learn to use to make our skiing more enjoyable and efficient is the "g" = the acceleration of gravity = 982.0 cm/sec sec or 32.22 ft/sec sec We are using gravity to ski the best line we see when we round the tree. We use gravity to help enjoy the cost/run ratio (which after a good year = $.50 =/-). However if we learn how our skis prefore when we let them go due to gravity skiing will be the fun it should be all the time. We learn to control the ski by knowing how to use gravity.

But this past season I was proud of how well my wife skied having gone through knee scoping; how we managed 15 days despite the terrible winter weather which was most times like spring weather; somewhat proud of my 272 runs and one day of 51 runs ... but I can't see the bearing to the quizz.

I hope my driving to where I'm headed now won't be distracted by the lingering puzzlement.

I think I will have another sleepless night tonight !!!

freezywater wrote:I must congratulate both Ellistine and Mike for single handedly keeping this forum going through the dreary summer months!!! Sorry - you too Pavel! I must admit to being completly stumped, although at 165 the skis in question would be too short anyway, so good luck to both, being completly un-biased i would have to say; "come on ellistine!" sorry Mike but must support the home boy! By the way for someone who claims to be 1/4 welsh your countrymen would be aghast to hear you placing Chester in Wales, close but definately ENGLAND. Lovely place though, typical english cathedrl city (think York or Canterbury).

You mean all these years I had thought I had visited Wales ... and I only got close :?: :!: Now I'm gobsmaked :( Must look up the tour company and send them an email saying "... on your bike!" tha'll get'em. How close? Maybe they parked the bus in Wales and we crossed the boarder into England! A friend's husband is from Wales. I must get her to ask him how close I was!!!

On the second trip we took the tour to Canterbury and we even "donated" to 2p or whatever it was for the pleasure of climbing all those steps in the tower for the great view from the roof. Well at least we saw the roof!.

165 is a good length for lively and snappy turns - as their prmo literature states. And if you didn't cheer on the native son - he might come and get you !

But, I hope you are spending sleepless night just the same -- the only way to fully "enjoy" Pavel's quizz!

Dshenberger wrote:Haha! No worries Mike! :)

I think we should all work together, and come up with a test for Pavel!!

Now there's a good idea... but we would be hard up to come up with as good a prize. I wonder if Pavel might remember the magical number of the hurricane which destroyed PPP in Halifax a couple of years ago? But this is too easy for the quizz master, himself.

I'm becoming so distracted that my daily work is falling behind ...

I have to confess I have finally done the google search ... has anyone else?

There are so many magic numbers out there that this quizz could be the quizz to end all quizzes.

For Example: Sunday River (as all resorts) have a magic number in temperature which signals to turn on the snow guns, the number of turns the legs can take before a rest is considered a "magic" number, 20 is thought to be the magic mumber for the number of times to run Birkebeiner to calim "membership" in an elite club, 74 mph is a magic number when speaking of hurricanes ... and the list goes on and on .

So what exactly numbers make the skis "magical"? That is the question.

The ski length and specifications as related to the skier and conditions make them magical.

How the ski is tuned and maintained make them magical.

The cost of the ski certainly must add to the magic and therefore the time to purchase brings about this magic.

The entire skiing experience is magical and is enhanced by the magical ski.

But "its all about the ski".

So let's try to put the numbers into these thoughts.

165 = ski length and 11 meters= ski turning radius

-5C= the temperature which I like when we "allow" the skis to run magically with the suitable waxes for the conditions for the ski base type.

0 degrees base bevel and 2 side bevel for solid grip.

20 the magic number of turns the ski let's us enjoy (depending on terrain and our ability).

And, again 4= April ... the best time to buy and save $$$ for the magical experience.

But I expect I will have a headache from banging my forehead as Pavel suggests, when the answer is revealed. It will be simpler than any of our answers so far.
We are thinking too far within "the box" but at the same time I've spiralled so far away from the target !!!

Ahhh, what frustration ... no, no , I mean what fun !!!

Dshenberger;

I must appoligize ... I have just reviewed the replies to this great (but puzzelling) quizz and I noticed you suggested the time to buy the skis may be one of the numbers as related by month. After your reply I included the same thing in one of my replies. (4 = April) as the best time to buy the skis as a money saving aspect. I didn't mean to "crowd" your number.

Intrigued !! That's true for sure ... but are you enjoying the sleepless nights Agusl ??? That is the true sign of a "player" in the Great Pavel Springtime Quizz !!!

We seldom take advantage of the features of where we live. It is the same here
I've seen very little of the UK. I've never been East of London nor North of the Lake Districts. Last summer I bought a new Cabrio car so at some point I want to do a summer time tour of the UK. The trouble is I end up using all my Holiday during the winter (for obvious reasons). I currently have 4 out of my 26 days of Holiday left that need to last me until 31st of December!
When do you leave for Cornwall
Tomorrow 7am  - a bit too early for me.

Have a great drive !

I should have mentioned... also with the 1994 trip ... just as we were getting on the plane in Halifax my brother passed me a video camera and asked we get some footage of the TVR sports car plant in Blackpool - for his local motorsport TV program. We did request a tour and were treated royally.

I see they have been taken over and may still be in trouble. They were really nice cars.

Drive carefully - on the wrong side of the road for us North Ameriicans
