Thanks everyone for your (as usual) comprehensive replies and the links to the great pics. Tino, hope to be there, probably first 2 weeks of October, but our plans are very fluid and can always change - mainly depends on what the weather in Switzerland is like - if its really poor, such as lots of rainy days, we often head across to the Dolomites and Lake Garda - so keeping my fingers crossed for a great early autumn in CH. May have a few days also in Saas Fee. :D

Woops, I've just noticed that Bandit, in my previous thread, said that there won't be a problem with cravesses on marked pistes. Still interested in comments on clothing though and any experiences of issues on marked pistes.

Could anyone with experience of on piste skiing at Saas Fee and/or Zermatt tell me if there is any issues re possibiltiy of cravesses on the pisted areas on the glaciers? We won't be going off piste, but are cautious about the risks on piste. Any info gratefully received. Also what is the weather likely to be like late Sept early Oct and what should we wear if we try it. We will be around the area for up to 2 weeks so will only ski if its a nice day.

Thanks Bandit, would you have any thoughts as to how many days at each, i.e. more at Saaf-Fee and less at Zeematt or vice-versa?

The OH and I are off to Switzerland with our caravan in September and have time to head for Saaf-Fee and/or Zermatt in early October to do some skiing.
We could park the caravan by either Saas-Fee or Randa and travel to both, or spend a few days at one and then move to the other. The lift pass, I understand, covers both resorts, allowing you to buy a flexible 6 days pass which you can use a day at a time with days off if you like. Is one area better than the other, what's "summer" skiing like? We just want to cruise and carve. We're not park users. The OH is also concerned about reports of crevasses and the risk of falling into one - is this a serious risk? Any advice would be appreciated. Dixie |
