Good, used, cheap beginner ski

By "to old" I mean are they an "older" style that wouldn't be good to learn on (like skis from the 80's) or are they close enough to new skis for a beginner. From what I can find on them they should be a good 1st time skier ski.

Thanks,
Brad

My son, who I will be teaching to ski first, is ~150cm at the chin. I want to get him used skis instead of renting. He won't need the 150s for long, he will probably outgrow them and/or advance out of them fairly fast so I don't want to spend much. I was looking at used skis on ebay. There are a lot of "ROSSIGNOL CUT 10.4" going really cheap and they have good reviews but they are about 8 years old now. Is that too old? If so how old is to old? Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Brad
Which is best in Seattle?

Seattle (Western Washington for that matter) :

Was Kurt Kobain from Seattle?

Yes he died in Seattle, he was from Aberdeen, Washington, about 120 miles southwest of Seattle, kind of a run down town about 1/2 hour from the coast.

Jimi Hendrix was

That is correct, other notable Seattle artists/groups: Heart, Queensryche, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, SoundGarden and Presidents of the United States of America are the biggest I can think of at the moment.

And arent Boeing planes built there?

Yes.

doesn't it rain 9 months of the year there?

No. I Just look up the average days of measurable rain per year over the last 50 years. It is 150, that leaves 200+ with no rain. Although the last few summers have been a bit weak, normally from late April/early May through late September/Early October, you can expect partly, mostly or completely sunny skies, with temperatures in the 60's to 90's F (~upper teens to mid 30's C) . http://www.met.utah.edu/jhorel/html/wx/climate/daysrain.html is the rain list I referenced, lists average rainfall per month also.

Seattle averages only 58 clear days a year, with most of those days occurring between June and September.

Although likely true that is very misleading. That would be 58 days with completely clear skies. There are a lot more partly or mostly sunny.

arriving 17th dec

Hopefully the ski areas will be open by then. Some times they open for our "Thanksgiving" holiday in late Nov. and then close until Xmas time, but if we have snow anything like last year, it will be open then.

When are you coming through? The season doesn't usually start until late November or December.

I got free waxing with my seasons pass at a local shop, so I will have mine waxed when I have the bindings mounted soon.

Also the seller is sending me a replacement for my broken binding piece.

Brad

P.S. Forgot to mention, My new skis are "VOLKL SUPERSPORT S5 SKIS 168 w/Marker Motion IPT 11 BINDINGS" :D

I was born and raised in Washington State and still live here. Crystal is a very good mountain, generally considered the best in the State. I only skied Baker once and don't really remember it at all (I was less than 10, 30+ years ago). For the most part you don't find good powder around here, last year was an exception though. Baker is a 4+ hour drive when I can get to 4 other resorts in about 2 hrs or less. But if it is all about the powder, Baker does have the world record for snow fall in a year at 1140 inches (about 29 meters).

Also in case you didn't know, K2 Was started in Washington State, Vashon Island http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K2_Sports

New ski's straight out of the 'wrapping' do they need to be waxed before they are broken in?? Or is the final stage of manufacture a waxing ready for the first piste???

I was going to ask the same question.

PS - I think ebay have a dispute process, so if the seller doesn't sort out a replacement - contact ebay.

I think it is mostly a cosmetic piece and could be glue together with out much problem, definitely easier than trying to send it back.
