shouldn't raise any problems for a skier, consider it strength training :-) and they're more hygienic you know...

hi all, I'm off to Tignes this wednesday.

I've been checking the j2ski weather forecasts for months now and it's been looking amazing, snow every day for the past fortnight, mostly at night, looking great....but.....

....for a while now I've noticed that the published base rate is 180cm and that just hasn't changed. considering the reports says they've had about a meter in the past 3 weeks i would expect it to change a bit, at least....

and...

when i look at the webcams, and look at things like fenceposts or buildings, there doesn't seem to be any new snow in evidence.

Is anyone in Tignes at the moment or know what's going on? of course I don't expect the forecast to be 100% accurate but they are generally good and fairly consistent with what i read from the charts myself and other sites out there.

the webcams look great but as I'm really after powder its the fresh, off piste stuff, i'm most excited about. any views on this anyone? anyone just come back?

i don't know about it being the best resort but mt ruapehu in the north island had a early season snow pass where you got 4 half days of training, which if completed/graduated, meant you could buy a rocket pass (!) for really cheap. I can't remember the exact prices but i remember it worked out as about the equivalent of 9 day passes,,,,for a whole season.

south island has bigger resorts i'm told, seasonaire anywhere will be fun though. we worked in the cities when we were there and just drove to the snow every weekend. unless the surf was good, then we'd surf on the way to the mountain. 8) happy days!
thanks everyone. we've got a few ideas now, will depend on conditions locally i guess. we're looking into the airport stuff. so, again, thanks.

this might be my favoured option now, thought I would share with you : www.bobsleigh.net in Albertville. taxi bob looks great, but raft bob might be the one.
good reasoned answer. we'll see what happens - i think la tania is more likely destination as only 128km away so could feasibly be on the first lift by 1pm. haven't got a clue about french/swiss sides of airport!

it's all about being on the snow and we definitely wouldn't bother going up if we could n't get on a lift before 1.30pm

thanks for all the info everyone. at the moment some of what you're saying is confirming my worst fears about France - busy and crowded in these big resorts.i Tignes sounds like an amazing place though so hopefully there and nearby spots will even things out.
Thanks Betty, sounds nice and positive, those are odds we like. I've forgotten since my original research whether its val claret or lavachet - but it's basically the highest part of tignes. or did you mean the individual apartment itself? If its that I'll need to grab the email.
