Ski hire
Started by User in Ski Hardware, 2 Replies
We are taking our own boots for our next ski hol but will be hiring skis.
Now that we've skied a couple of times and we're improving our skills and techniques I'd like try to get a hire ski that helps us to ski to the best of our abilities.
We've booked our skis through Crystal and so end up arriving at the shop on the Sunday, giving the man a ticket and getting what we're given without much knowledge as to what we really need.
Both wife and I are at an early intermediate level, skiing blues and easy reds.
So, I now hand over to you oh wise ones to pass on your wisest of know how.

Spent some interesting times in Helensburgh during my time with the Royal Navy whilst working in Faslane.

I'm harking back to the days of the infamous and original Akash curry house and a lady I think was called Big Nancy who used to frequent the ale houses of Helensburgh. Not that I had any intimate knowledge of Nancy but was introduced to the scary 'lady' and that was enough for me.

Brad you couldn't be further away from the point if you took a 500 mile diversion with your eyes shut!
You need to get to Europe for a ski holiday.
Group or private?

Must admit I love the group banter and the giggles. We've always socialised after lessons and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
Last year (only my second ski holiday) I was the butt of most of the laughs as I attempted the half pipe on skis!! Up and down the walls I went all the way to the bottom without incident. Stopped at the bottom to acknowledge my admiring fans, pose for the camera and then fell on my arse!!

Group or private?

Self and wifey are off to Grindelwald again in January. Both of us are of similar standard and just about to venture on to the reds. Having done group lessons for the last 2 years which took up all day for 5 days we were wondering whether going private would benefit us.
By the end of our group week we were the stronger pair in the group and spent a lot of time waiting on the slope for the dare I say it weaker members to catch up. So much so that by the Thursday we binned the group and went off on our own.

We can have 5 full days with a group or 3 half days private for simialr money. My own opinion is that we will gain much more from the private option but thought I'd open it up to the forum for some experienced opinion.

Cheers,
Jim

Grindelwald, Wengen and Murren

Stayed in Grindelwald last January at the Sunstar. Lovely town, fantastic hotel with pool and spa looking out at the Eiger.

We were not able to ski easily into town due to lack of snow but once up to Bort and beyond there's no problem. First ski area is the sunnier side and has some lovely cruisy blues and reds.
Restaurants at First and Shreckfeld are good for a lunchtime stop. Ski school was excellent with creche facilities and restaurant at Bodmi ski area.

Efficient but slow access to Kleine Scheidig area via train opens your ski areas out to let you get down to Wengen. Only went over the once to watch the men's downhill which was amazing. Going back this year same week (10-17 Jan) to ensure we see the racing again.

Loads to do in Grindelwald if you don't ski. Sports centre has skating rink, pool etc. Plenty of walking routes clearly marked and if you don't want to walk you can toboggan. There's also an amazing 15km toboggan route from the Faulhorn I think. Does involve along walk but worth it.

Apres ski is low key, mainly in hotel bars. Transport system runs with typical Swiss efficiency.

Love the place and thoroughly recommend it
