We stayed in Ellmau for Christmas 2007 and liked it so much that we are going back this year!
We were the only family on our coach from the airport staying in Ellmau - everyone else went on to Soll - so I guess that maybe has more hotels/nightlife. Our hotel was very near to the ski schools. There was a ski bus to the funicular railway - but it was also possible to ski back if you still had enough energy! Our sons did it a couple of times. I also walked from the village to the funicular a couple of times. We stayed in the village in the Sporthotel. There are a few hotels fairly central, and there is the hotel Blathof (I think it is called) which we were told was nice, but definitely out of town. |

I can't remember where the Alpenhof is. We stayed in the Sporthotel which was really near to the nursery slopes/ski school. Certainly easy enough for the kids (then 13/14) to ski back on their own.
If there is anything you want finding out, we are going in 2 weeks! |

Its a lovely little village. We are off again on 19th (2 weeks to go!) after a fantastic Christmas two years ago.
Lots of families - mainly dutch - when we were there last time, but our young teens were quite happy! Are you staying in a hotel? |

for Christmas 2007 we went to Ellmau in Austria. On Christmas Eve the supermarket was frantic all morning for last minute food shopping as it closed at midday. Then in the afternoon, all the ski schools finished early and Santa arrived by hang glider. The little kids loved it (ours were too old and far too cool!)
IN the evening we got a fantastic multi-course meal in the hotel. Christmas Day was just a normal skiing day, except that we got back to the hotel to find baked stuffed apples on offer in the lounge! Christmas presents? We took giant toblerones of course!! (and exchanged real pressies when we got home!) Off to Ellmau again this year! |

We have Shrove Tuesday, Wednesday, any day ........
I am feeling very virtuous. I have done pancakes, made bread rolls, done Tesco online, put son's rugby kit into soak. I should be shutting chickens in, but they can wait a few more minutes! |

Since I posted the question, I emailed a friend of mine who has been skiing for many years and she has offered to lend me her goggles plus her demister (whatever that is!). She says the goggles don't fit over all styles of specs - but I've got two different pairs, so hopefully they will fit at over at least one.
I've only needed specs as I have got older, and I don't think contacts are going to be an option for me, because I need varifocals and also I have incredibly dry eyes. |

Husband is not home till the weekend, so I can't make any decisions just yet. Just looking for an alternative in case Obergurgl plan goes pear shaped!

Saw this place in the brochures. Has anybody been?
Sounds as though there are hotels near the lifts or hotels in the village. Its not clear how far apart these are, and if you are not in the village, is it walking distance in the evening? Still trying to decide where to go late-March! |
