I too have the same dillema, however, mine differs slighly as my daughter has booked a package deal to Tignes with her partner over Christmas and it will be her 21st Birthday whilst she is there.

Due to only having 5 days off over Christmas there are no packages so that leaves a DIY. So fly or drive, flights are expensive so that leaves train or Drive which I am considering.

My guage was last weekend as I drove to Disney in Paris, this took 6.5 hrs, 3 to Dover3.5 tunnel and France. When I arrived there I asked could i do another 6 hrs? The answer in my head was "no chance"

I have concluded that, as others have stated, that it needs an overnight stay to break the Journey up as the fatigue of driving all the way will ruin the first day at resort.

Leading back to my dilemma, for 5 days, travelling for 2.5 ish of them, my feelings are that on the way there will be exciting, stay overnight and get there PM on the first day, skis on off we go BUT the thought of the drive on the way back really does not entice me with nothing to look forward too.

So probably going to throw a party for her and book a package in Feb !

Thanks Adders, TH and greedy, I think it worth the road trip, no buggering about in airports etc.

I am going to guage it in two weeks time as driving to Disney in Paris, I will know at the point when I get there, as Tignes would be another 7 hr drive approx.

The road trip to the Alps does excite me though, something different and never done before.

Can I hire Snow Chains?

Ha Ha, no I wont TH.

So I am now on a differnt plan, and I know you guys have good ideas ref this.

My daughter has booked Tignes for a week at Christmas for a week, as you know my time off is limited so I am now contemplating driving , to get there on 24th stay for three days and drive back on 28th????

Am I mad, will this be too expensive?

One part of me says do it, an adventure looms, the other part of me says that the drive will kill me, will be too tired to ski and I will not look forward to the drive back?

Am I mad for thinking this?

Like that idea Dave Mac, thank you, will get Mrs P on it in the morning, I do fancy Austria as they do Christmas a bit better than the french and also cheaper :D

Will it be okay that early in the season? only 750m high? or would you suggest somewhere higher?

Hi Team, thanks Sm4sh for starting this one as I am looking for a short break too as due to work and school hols clashing I am stuck, hence, not being able to do the J2ski trip, as I was trying to work that last month, thanks Ally for your advice, sorry cant make it.

So, my predicament gets worse, I have 5 days off from 24th Dec to 28th Dec, although can finish work PM on 23rd but back in the office on 29th.

yes, worse time of year for cost, I know, however, I am unable to find a 5 day package which means potential DIY. Anyone come across anything in those dates that is not horrendously expensive?
