Austria: where to go
Started by User in Austria, 36 Replies
I'd go for Ellmau. Heated seats all around and wonderful for small children as the beginner slope is perfect but she can get to any of the other skiwelt area which is cruising motorways. Great for a chirpy 5 yr old I'd say! My son loved it there then.
other place is Saalbach. Bit more noisy at night, but slopes are wide open pistes aplenty.
Last place to recommend would be Kaprun. Glacier skiing and lovely pistes so she enjoys it and you can see her easily.
~Reading your wish list for the type of village you wish to stay in then I would go for Alpbach in Austria. It's absolutely beautiful. My partner and I went on a last minute with Allocation on Arrival last year. We were allocated Alpbach which we were ok with - on paper. When we got there we were blown away. The skiing is good intermediate but not the huge area you might get elsewhere. It's cheap - compared to other places. But most importantkly the village is sublime. The food and pubs etc are wonderful. Huge portions, reasonable cost, and AUTHENTIC Austria. I think everything in the village is owned by just a few families. Brits have been going there for years and I mean that we bumped into all sorts who have been there as children and still come back every year fo 25 years! We are going again this year, with our kids though, and are happy to eat out and enjoy the village. It's enjoyable enough to have plenty of apres ski, but is quiet, upmarket, cheap though, and just Austria proper. (by the way we wouldn't ski in France again - touristy, pushy, self service restaurants and not for us. We love France but not ski towns).
Oh forgot to say. The way they're made is that you drill a tiny bore hole in the back of each boot to fix the fixing on. (very secure and doesn't harm the boot at all). You then wear the mojos. The detachable parts are two rods, one for each boot, which connect the boot to the mojo. It's just one thing you have to remember to take with you, just like remembered your sun glasses or goggles. you have to remember the rods. You just put them on when putting your boots on and take them off again at the end of each day.
hehe. That would be a sight! No. What you do is when you dress in the morning, you put your mojos on under your salopettes. Have breakfast and then drive etc etc. There is a button on the hip of each one, which you press, very easily through the salopettes. It takes 10 seconds max. The button engages and disengages the mojos. So you have them disengaged for walking around, driving, drinking your beers etc hehe, and ALSO when you sit on the chair lifts etc. You then get to the top, engage them again, put on your poles and away you go. I don't even notice my partner doing it. Sometimes he forgets to disengage them before sitting on a chair and then it's a bit uncomfortable or he has to wriggle around to disengage them, but he wouldn't be without them now. In fact he drove me crazy last year when one of the attachments broke. He mended it with cable ties until he got back to the UK and then ordered a replacement attachment. (they've changed the design of it now, so it can't happen again). Good luck and go for them! Again, let me know.
No performance really, just have to have the two strutts cut to size which you can do yourself. They really are good, but take a look at the website (if you haven't already!) Good luck and let us all know.

If you haven't got them yet, then I would try driving in the other direction for a tad further but it'll be worth it. I read on here the other year that two places were fantastic for ski boots. One was in Morzine but the other in Leamington Spa! I went to the Leamington place and the boots they fitted took an hour and a half and are PERFECT! They put padding on your feet where you might need a bit of extra room and take numerous measurements of your feet AND legs so they can recommend the right boot for you. I can't recommend them enough. Their name is Lockwoods... details

Sounds brill - and cheaper than France, which is always good. I can't wait to be honest. I go away as much as poss but it's all so expensive with kids. Fell in love iwth Alpbach but need to go half term as it's so low. Therefore too expensive any other way. Thanks all !!
