I did the Sella Ronda in 1.5 hours, in 2002. There were far fewer skiers on the slopes than there are now, so fewer hindrances, and small lift queues. As far as being an athlete, (which I was), I had the year before just broken, for the second time, the Niederau day run record. This record was first set in 1948 by Austrian international, Toni Seelos. He started a ski school in Niederau for Austrian racers. Over the years, the record was broken several times, including, by myself in 1973 and 2001. My 2001 record was beaten by the now head instructor. I was the only person to hold the record twice, in it's 69 year old history. All this stuff is just to respond the the skepticism. This year marks 50 years of skiing for me ~ I don't think I will be breaking any more records! |

Indeed we did arrive on Saturday afternoon, but my eldest son and I went up to the Col Rodella, and skied down into Canazei.
Just returned from a great weeks skiing in Val di Fassa. The rock formations are sensational. The only downside is the sheer volume of skiers. |

Great posting Kowal. This is an important issue, and one of the least understood, but most important aspects of skiing.
As ever, an informative posting by Swingbeep. Many years back, I used the Marker chart for assessing my Din settings. (6.5) I ski from medium pace up to 110kph. (Yes, I know, I am slowing down!) I also checked against other binding manufactures with similar results. However, after 20,000 miles of track, cross country and fell running, plus 50 years of skiing, I have to plan to consider managing my knees. Several years back, at a period of bad knees, I started to set my bindings at 4, thinking I was protecting myself. Bad decision. I eventually found my ski.... Nowadays, I rarely fall, maybe once every 3 or 4 years, and that is 4/6 weeks skiing a year. That is partially experience.... I have a range of desperate fixes that avoid falls! However, that is all aside from the issue. On the odd occasions that I hire skis, on just about every occasion I have checked, and have agreed the settings. It is also important to check that heel and toe binding settings concur. Every ski shop I have been with, I mostly use Skiset, through J2ski, have set my bindings correctly. Given that the settings are easy to check, I cannot see any reason why any ski shop would arbitrarily increase the given setting. They would be laying themselves open to an insurance claim. Going back to my initial comment, it is important that all skiers should know their DIN settings. |

Look forward to that, Wanderer. Always good to meet with regular J2skiers, but you particularly have regular sensible postings.
I may be constrained by being with our group, but I will be shouting for Ireland! (Irish ancestry! County Mayo!) Will you manage some skiing on Sunday? |

Generally porridge in the low alpine resorts.
However the high glaciers are likely to hold up well. Trying to think of some located from Vienna. Maybe Kaprun would be a good shout. |
