We have about 7 days before they close our hills here for the season ..... sad time of year indeed

Ian,

On a powder day, even Ice is our friend !

Yesterday I was speaking with a fellow oin the lift who mentioned Silver Star in BC as a nice hill too. He was there mid-Feb and for the duration of his week's stay they received 98 cms in overnight snow falls! That must have been nice :D

Here is their site : http://winter.skisilverstar.com/

I tried some icy (unfriendly) moguls here (in NS) yesterday ... wasn't pretty! But it was my first day back on the snow since that great trip to SR! two weeks ago.

Churr,

Check out the BC hills. Sun Peaks, Revelstoke, Big White and of course Kicking Horse. There are others no doubt but all in BC. All the good snow in Canada is out west. (We keep the ice in the east so we can be good on any surface!)

Have fun!

Pavel,

Next time we are at SR, I'll get some video of you so all can see the true meaning of "smooth & graceful" !

Trencher, the slow motion is a great teaching aide!

Now only if winter would stick around a few more days.....

Now, we know two things about Pavel..... 1) His ski knowledge and interest in the sport is legendery and 2) he is a very private person. So with this in mind I want to fully respect that. I will tell you something Pavel tells others about our original "meeting". When I took up skiing I found a site where I posted a question as to the value or not of using candle wax to wax skis. He happened to see this question and took pity on my obvious state of interest yet lack of any knowledge. He has been most helpful in grooming my ski interest and ski life. So when I decided to take this Sunday River trip I called Pavel and told him. We arranged the meeting. You guys should see him ski. Such flow !!! So smooth and so soft and graceful !! Sights I will never forget ...... as he vanished behind on berm and another --- as I tried desperately to keep up. He treats his skis as he does women... with gentle love, kindness and respect.

I didn't see Pavel and his friends today. Today is a powder day at Sunday River 12 inches so far and supposed to snow all night. What is the comment about friends and powder days ? I imagine he was in his element like no other today. Too bad we all leave for the real world tomorrow ! But as I said before we spoke of some of our internet skiing contacts on the chair. Dave Mac and Trencher and a friend we knew from the other site. My hope is to develop skill worthy of skiing with DaveMac and Trencher when they ski with Pavel. That would be heaven for sure.

Thanks for your comments guys .....I do indeed feel very lucky. The weather here has been perfect and 20cms expected tonight. Pavel took time from his 3 friends to enlighten me in skiing technique. He's a difficult person to keep up with. He tried to have me follow a mere 3 meters behind him down a trail about 6 times. That lasted about 2 seconds and he was gone. One short stretch I was starting to catch on but by then my thighs were burnt out and wouldn't co-operate. Yes he exists and this morning my wife and I happened to ride the chondola in the car before the happy quartet. We greeted them at the top with a boisterous "Bonjour mes amies!!" I would post a photo of this moment -- "The Arrival" -- but Pavel would not appreciate that.... so this will not happen !

It has been a while since I've offered any "chatter" but today I have to. Absolutely have to !!!! We all can remember the best day we have had on skis and today was my best! Dave Mac ...listen closely ... you may be a tad jealous after my story. Your name came up on the Jordon Bowl chair left at Sunday River today. I do like to brag when I get a chance.....

OK enough rambling. I had the most distinguished privilege to ski with the Great One! The Great One who has offered such helpful advice to all of us. I skied with Pavel !!!! Yes that's correct ...Pavel and I skied together this afternoon!! Well ... I followed. Near the end of one ride up we talked about you Dave .... all good comments - of course.

The skiing was wonderful and let me assure all of you Pavel has not only great advice ... he has vast amounts of patience and guidance. Today I was 4 years old again..... Well he told me that ... I couldn't ski then either !! Maybe there was a message in that comment !! But I feel more like 94 right now. I hope one day, you all get to experience an afternoon skiing with Pavel. It is an experience that I know I will never forget. Today's skiing was a bit more intense than yesterday's when both my wife and I skied with Pavel and his friends. Two days both my wife and I will never forget !! If you happen to see this note Pavel .... Thank you ... thank you ....one hundred-thousand thank yous!!

How do you handle skiing on ICE?
Started by User in Ski Technique, 80 Replies
Hello Pavel,

Mais oui ... both sets are Atomics and indeed are very nice skis. A very kind friend set my wife and me up with them. We've had many very enjoyable hours on these skis. They have helped us to enjoy skiing and understand the love of skiing so many people enjoy. Can't wait for the season to get going and for a trip to SR. This will likely make this the most enjoyable ski year to date for us. Certainly will be a new experience.

The ski quiver always has room for company... ... especially skis that are great on ice !!

But one must earn and prove worthiness of the additions to the collection.

Mike :)
