:D :D :D It feels so good to be back up. After a short day of rock skiing at Crystal Mountain http://www.skicrystal.com/ on the the 21st, spent a full day on much better snow yesterday at White Pass http://skiwhitepass.com/. The steeps were still closed but we had a LOT of powder everywhere. It has been so cold that they can't groom normally, it hasn't warmed up to melt the top layer and create a base to groom, but I wasn't complaining at all, other than I should have brought my powder boards, thought I was going to be stuck on groomers all day.

Been skiing with an old friend I bumped into last season who is one of the best skiers I have ever seen (in style and form anyway) My other friends agree that it is like a work of art watching him ski. He has been giving me some pointers that have really helped. I can't wait to get back up, work on his pointers and trying them out when all the steeps open up. It is supposed to snow about 2 feet over the next week, Saturday should be great :D
I don't know that the OP was necessarily trolling. I am not sure about the reasons he sighted, but I have had similar conversations with my group of ski buddies.

We seek out 2 things, moguls & powder. Boarders don't have any negative effect on powder (more than skiers anyway), but on the moguls, they commonly shave them off, into odd patterns. The somewhat standard mogul is no more. It is just the way it is these days, but kind of sad for us skiers also.

The other thing I will say is that, in general, snow boarders are a MUCH more foul mouthed group. Getting back into skiing in 2008, it is common to hear kids loudly saying "f***" this or that. It is almost always a group of snowboarders. It doesn't necessarily bother me a lot but there are commonly kids around as well as older people that don't need to hear their lack of an intelligent vocabulary.

I thought the idea of a forum was to have fun with the debate.......

Agreed, I haven't told anyone they need to wear a helmet, just pointed out that skiing has gotten more extreme in the last 10+ years, and a helmet does make more sense now than before.

Tony, the contrarian comment was meant in jest. Maybe I should have said you like to talk Shite ) Anyone who's favorite movie is Pulp Fiction can be all bad.

Helmets are safety devices and are most definitely not cool. Hats are extremely fashionable.
For those who want to look like window lickers or who actually perform extreme enough skiing to warrant wearing one (ie unpatrolled off piste, base jumping, jibbing in the park etc ie where the risk of falling over is MASSIVELY increased) then I guess you have to find the "coolest" lid you can, which I think must be difficult, but all this nonsense talk about the risk has increased per se....come on?

I do believe we had this discussion last season, and its not going to change.

If you feel you need to wear a lid, feel free. If you ski to extremes, probably a good decision. But for us holiday skiers, please continue to feel free to choose what you want on your head (as long as its not those stupid things with bright pink hair built in....).

I do like the idea of children and beginners having to wear helmets however. I think you should be issues with a certificate of competency by an instructor, which enables you to have the honour of wearing a hat rather than a helmet. A bit like throwing away your L plates when driving.

I am sure the day will come when we are all forced to wear a helmet, just because the media over hype someones unfortunate death which they will no doubt pin on the fact the person was not wearing a helmet yet again, but I will choose not to until that time comes. I find my collection of hats not only keep my head warm when its particularly cold, but they also complete my extremely stylish look on the slopes.
With a lid on, that look would be diminished massively.

Each to his own.

I get it now (I haven't posted a lot here) you are a contrarian. I don't know about the "lids" on your side of the pond, but a lot of the ones over here look plenty cool in my assessment.

Nerdy - bobble hats? Are you actually real?
Coming from people who look like day release with their lids on, thats actually quite funny  8) )

Seriously, nothing has changed since people began skiing. There is a risk, of course, but whats made it more serious in recent times?
Oh yeah, the media.
Glad I dont read the papers.

Thats exactly the the view I started with when getting back into skiing a couple years ago. But it is incorrect, things have changed. With fatter skis, we are seeking out the powder more and more, often off piste. Also the level of tricks these days are way beyond what we were doing, just 20 years ago. No one, outside of Olympic level skiers, would have imagined the jumps that are common in terrain parks now.

Well, thought I would revive this old thread to say, I bought a helmet for this next ski season :)

I do get it now, with all the off piste skiing I have been doing and the level I want to push myself to, it is a good idea, also got one for my son.

Also going Skiing tomorrow at Crystal Mnt.

No... stop right there Brad and check with your doc.

I took your (and others) advice and saw an orthopedist today. His verdict; just a sprain and already looking quite good :D He recommended 4-6 weeks of exercise before it would be back at full strength (or better) but it is ~90+% now (imo) and getting better by the day, so I can ski if I want, I just need to take it easy for the next month. Needless to say I am very pleased with the news, and I only missed a couple days I could have skied :D

Well.....

I am a little less enthusiastic about the next week of skiing :( I was skiing slow caught a groove as I was coming up to a stop, bit it, and managed to wrench my right knee fairly bad. I can ski on it but I have to take it VERY easy and it hurts whenever I move it wrong. It wouldn't be such a big deal if I wasn't going to a mountain I haven't been to since I was 10 :( tomorrow. I am really upset about it. I hope it feels better tomorrow but I am thinking this isn't going to heal completely for 2-4 weeks.
