The Admin Man - I appreciate your detailed and very considered reply which is very useful. I would have checked your forecast every day last week and despite it being very wrong for a couple of days the "theme" of the original forecast remained - that is my recollection which I accept could have got skewed due to the amount of reports I looked at. However, my overall perception of the J2Ski forecasting over the past 6 years is that they tend to over estimate the amount of snow when compared to other sites and certainly when compared to reality. Also, I don't understand why your forecasts for a particular day can be so wrong even when it is say 8am in the morning of that very day; maybe you could explain please?

Hi All
I wanted to update this thread. I use snow forecasts on a regular basis when I am in resort. I know that predicting high mountain weather is very difficult but I would have thought that the overall 'theme' would be correct. Last week in Tignes, the prediction for the whole week from J2Ski was that it was going to snow every day with a total new snow of 174cms! In actuality it snowed once with a fall of about 15cms. I wrote to J2Ski about this vast difference and in particular with comparison to some other forecast sites but have had no reply. This is not a one off by any means as I mentioned here a few years ago. At that time Admin said that there were going to be changes made to their system. The accuracy of weather forecast is very useful and often important, and notwithstanding the difficulty in making forecasts surely the overall 'theme' should be correct. I would very much hope that someone from J2Ski forecast team is able to comment on this please. |

Dave Mac - after you posted a quite abusive email about my opinion to which I replied to twice you have gone very quiet. Do you not like to admit you are wrong?

Interesting point Ranchero_1979 but nobody carves very short turns, moguls, steeps, powder, crud, powder etc. But I take your point there are not many people of either discipline that can carve on appropriate terrain. |

Dave Mac, I replied to your last post on this thread on the 25th March but you did not respond, did you see my post?

Thanks for you input munich_johnny. Would be interested to know what you mean by the above statement; are you suggesting that someone who skis with their feet very close together is better than someone who has their skis further apart or the other way around? |

Dave, the whole point of this post was to comment that it takes much longer to become a good skier than it does to become a good snowboarder and therefore the clock does start ticking as soon as someone rides for the first time at whatever age. I wasn't really talking about getting to ski instructor level but in this regard it is of course b******s that it would take 20 years/seasons to get from Anwarter to Staatliche but that was not the point I was making, I was saying it can take about 20 years/seasons i.e. a long time, to get from nothing to Staatliche/ISTD level. To reach Anwarter level takes time and again the clock would start ticking when someone starts skiing for the first time. We have all seen youngsters who are members of the local ski clubs flying around the mountain behind an instructor and/or going through gates; these are the next generation of instructors and the experience and skill they are gaining through their former years counts a great deal towards them becoming instructors. (It must be noted that if someone says they have been skiing for 20 years that could equate to 20 weeks as opposed to 20 full seasons. Either way it would take a person with an average amount of talent a huge amount of snow miles to reach Staatliche/ISTD). |
