I'm not convinced you would regret booking Oberau s-a-h. I've not explored it fully (only been through on the bus). If you're looking to potter on blues until you catch the bus I don't think you'll be disappointed. Oberau is a really pretty village with (amongst other things) a cafe which apparently serves out of this world cakes. I've not taken the time out of skiing to check for myself yet. It also seems to have a few more shops than N, which could be useful if skiing is not your main agenda item.

Billip I'm guilty of using the word ice when I should say hard packed snow. I know the difference, it's just pure laziness on my part. 'Hard packed snow' takes longer to say.

Hi S-a-h, Welcome to J2ski.
I don't think there will be a problem with altitude (in relation to snowfall) at that time of year. MrEvs and went over new year this year, and are hoping to go again possibly over both Christmas and NY next year. Perhaps Oberau is not the best for your group though. It has the least skiing of the three associated resorts. Niederau has more skiing, and also much of the accomodation is within the range you mention, either on the doorstep or within 100m. Plenty of blues to play on at the bottom. Generally the reds are easier in Auffach. I understand that taking two little uns (10 and 8 now?) on the ski bus could be a nightmare, although if you miss peak times it will be much easier for you. On the other hand, most people take the skibus in the Niederau-Oberau-Auffach direction for the day. If you take it from Oberau to Niederau in the morning (and obviously vice versa at the end of the day) I wouldn't be surprised if you're on the bus by yourselves. |

Graeme1986, just an idea but could you look at his current poles and see what length they are? Then buy the same...

If you don't like the thread stop posting on it. How dare you repeatedly post retarded comments in order to steamroll any conversation that other J2skiers may be able to have. Starting a thread on here shouldn't have to pass your imaginary standards before it's allowed to happen without you chipping in constantly. Do you realise that in this single thread alone you've probably deterred many less well known J2skiers from posting legitimate questions on this forum in case you deem them insignificant and behave like a complete penis?
It's bang out of order. Get you head out of your backside and go back to your bobble hats. Clearly in your world that's far more important than learning about piste conditions and hazards. Close the door on your way out. |

That was the point of the thread Dorset Boy. With all the talk of ice, how to ski on it etc I wondered how much of it was 'proper' and how much just hard packed snow. Sort the wheat from the chaff so to speak. For me at my level of ability it makes hell of a difference. I can manage hard pack. If I were to encounter a whole piste of solid ice (as has been mentioned) I would be horrified. From the comments so far (although yours offers a different view), it seems I've been really lucky to date in not having to deal with proper ice to any real extent. My aim was to find out if this was just good fortune, or pretty much the norm.

Dear Karma,
I can't wait to see what you have in store for these two lunks. Please can you arrange for it to be filmed in HD and put on YouTube? Cheers Em |
