There is now a local (to the country you are in) phone number that you can call and then connect to the UK through skype so all you are paying for is the local call and I assume the nominal Skype charge. This is a new feature though and I haven't looked into how it works I will confess!
Can't help you on the iphone app but have to say that so long as you have a reasonable wifi connection I found skype works great through a laptop. |

Congrats on the job! It will be hard work but well worth it.
I would recomend you getting a sim card for your phone once you are out there. I went travelling last year and had both my UK and a sim card from whatever country I was in with me. Whilst it was a pain the reason being so that everyone back home could text me on my UK mobile and it doesn't cost them anymore than usual but I replied on the foreign sim card which was much cheaper for me. The other thing for you, if you are taking a laptop or netbook, is to get Skype. Skype is the best invention for staying in contact when travelling. You can either make calls home for £0.01per min or (if you set it up) you can send texts for £0.08 and it shows your own mobile number. It will make life cheaper for your GF too...! |
