I once ordered a decaf in Italy; the woman seemed confused.... She called out the guvnor, who seemed to understand as I repeated 'sans cafenne' and 'bez kafeine' and all other languages I knew except Italian.... He nodded, told me to sit down, disappeared into the back and after ten minutes brought me out a cup of tea... |

A new 8-man gondola opening at Jasna this season....
Very cheap €78 6-day lift pass from 8th March... Beer prices held (again) at 80c, maybe you'll pay €1 on the mountain.... |

I seasoned in Andorra a few years back and had a great time. Amazing snow, good terrain, lively town (Pas de la Casa). The town is a bit of an party-town eyesore... Now the whole country is linked together on one skipass It's all about the snow. You could have a freebie holiday to Kicking Horse, Canada, but if there's no fresh snow, it will be a worse trip than freshies in Scotland.... |

Hi Lorgan. I live at Jasna - I moved here because of the easy pace of life, the off-piste potential of the mountain, and the affordability. The mountain is very good. I've been boarding for 13 years and it's enough for me.... There is vast off-piste, trees, and not so many people (as the Alps etc...) eager to access it - which leaves more of it for me... Temps. get cold and so the snow stays better longer. I've found light powder a week after the last storm... Jasna is the biggest resort in Central Europe. There are plenty of smaller resorts not too far (within 1 hr), but Jasna is the most extensive. The resort itself consists mainly of hotels. After dark it is a bit empty. It is inside a National Park so development is very limited (hence the off-piste). The town of Liptovsky Mikulas (where I live), at the bottom of the mountain road (15km) serves the mountain, with the bulk of accommodation, bars, restaurants, shops etc... Beers are €1 tops, even on the mountain, and you can get a 2-course lunch for €4. After a holiday in France or suchlike, that is a budget by anyone's reckoning.... Dan |

Hi Tony, There is not masses of piste length - the area is a National Park and development is highly restricted... Instead what you get at Jasna is a huge bowl, full of trees, with some pistes here and there. There is a lot of tree-riding and even more off-piste, easily accessible. In other places (especially the U.S.) you'd get a lot more pistes cut thru the woods and into the mountain to increase the 'piste length' statistic, but at Jasna it's not been done and it's all the better for it... |

Thanks Trencher - what's the deal with bindings? Are they uniform (will fit all boots?)

Got some boots off eBay - now all I need is a board. Any suggestions (for an advanced regular boarder) to dip his toe in the world of Alpine boarding?
