Ischgl or Solden??
Started by User in Austria, 22 Replies
been to both. Ischgl better. Solden pretty charmless. Better variety of runs in Ischgl, you can party in either place. Getting around Solden is messy. You'll have the whole place skiied in no time.
just back from morzine/avoriaz. Bad news I'm afraid, rained last 4 days of the week at all levels. Constant drizzle. OK base at top but even up there starting to turn slushy. Needed windscreen wipers on goggles. Toured the whole area - Swiss side of Porte du soleil just as bad. Avoriaz a bit better but really really packed with skiers as a result. Best skiing was in la linga area. Claim they're to get snow next week but seems to warm to me. Going higher next time. Cross your fingers and best of luck.
Half-Term

Hi,

I dont have kids so dont know this stuff but when is Frenach (and UK for that matter)half term over? I hear the queues have been brutal for the last couple of weeks. I'm heading to Morzine saturday just wondering if the queues might have died down by then?
Gettin a bit worried myself jclegg19 as heading there 23rd Feb. They do have really good snow now but set to be sunny for next 10 days. Check out www.accuweather.com and plug in morzine into world weather section. According to them Morzine due to get Snow/Rain in week of Feb 23rd on. Prob is it makes a pretty big difference which one it is. Dont think you can really forecast mountain weather that far out anyway. Surely the snow should hold up the road in Avoriaz anyway though? Do they have snow cannons running at night in Morzine, should be cold enough to make some fake stuff then?

Risoul

Was there for new year 2 years ago. We had excellent snow. Really good intermediate skiing especially over the link from risoul to vars. lots of variety of piste. really enjoyed the skiing. 3 star hotel we stayed in was rubbish and run entirely by english people so not very authentic french experience. there is limited nightlife (french teenagers)but a couple of really good restaurants (although a limited number). There's a really nice farmers market there a couple of times a week. Flew into Turin on a package and transfer was a nightmare (about 5 hours) on a coach stopping off at a million resorts on the way. So pros and cons but most importantly the skiing was really good for intermediates.
This weekend December 7th

I'm heading to Austria this weekend to try out this early snow. Flying into Munich, have a car, will drive anywhere within a 3 hour radius. Anyone got any ideas to maximise good snow, fully open resort, good weather?

Was thinking St Anton. But weather forecast looks iffy - lots more snow which could mean whiteouts.
Otherwise was thinking Soll (easy access from Munich but not as good snow) or Obertauern (which I dont know much about). Any help?
Early openings

Given the recent snowfalls I'm gagging to get on the slopes asap. Does anybody know what resorts have pre-committed to opening by December 8th?

I'm probably going to fly into Geneva and looking for anywhere that will definitely be open within a 2 hour drive. Alternatively i'll head to Munich and go somewhere within 2-3 hours of there so Soll, Ellmau etc. Anybody know the definite openings at this stage?
