Speed Guns
Started by User in Austria, 10 Replies
Hi,

Last year I went to Obertauern where I discovered a few runs that had speed guns on them.
I thought they were a great idea and as it was my first trip to Austria I was hoping that many other resorts in Austria would have them.
Unfortunately they don't appear to be as wide spread as I'd hoped.
Since my first Austria trip (and falling in love with the place) I've skied St Johann, Kitzbuhel (1 day), Fieberbrunn (1 day) and Mayrhofen.
I've not come across anymore speed guns although I think I'd found one at Fieberbrunn but it was at the end of the day and I had to head down another run to the next valley/area.

What I'd like to know is has anyone else come across resorts with speed guns on their slopes.
I'm off to Saalbach next year and I wondered whether there was any there although looking at the piste map there may not be :(

I have to say I was fairly tentative when I went down the red run in Obertauern and I fell the first time, probably due to being pretty scared.
The fact I wasn't hurt, and nicely surprised by that, I went down again but this time did a few turns at the start to slow down.
I managed to get up to 84.2 kmph (around 52 mph.

I was hoping to try again after maybe having a jagermeister for courage.
Maybe I could hit 90+ or maybe faster.

Only another 6 months until my holiday :(

I came across this yesterday online.
Has anyone ever attended this or another 'Summer ski resort'?

Might be worth a vist for a weekend but lifts shut at 1pm!!! Jeez that just encourages more time drinking...
Ski website reviews

Has anyone ever booked a holiday with skiline.co.uk as I'm thinking of booking a holiday through them.
They do have an ATOL number and it appears to be a legit site.

There are many different websites to book ski holidays through now and not a lot of information on them unlike the big ones like Crystal, Neilson etc.

Last year I booked a holiday through directski as they were pretty cheap.
They were okay although I did have a few issues with the rep, or should I say lack of one (rarely seen).
That was mainly down to them having no full time presence in Mayrhofen.
I would probably go with them again but only if I knew there was a rep in the resort, as we missed out on trips and general organization of travel etc.

I hope someone can get back to me soon as I want to book this week.

Thanks in advance.

Dunk,
I'm also heading out on the 31st of Jan to Mayrhofen.
I'm staying at the Strass.

I'm really looking forward to it although I hurt my knee at football last week but I'm getting treatment and fingers crossed it will be fine for the holiday.
The £ to € rate sucks at the moment and probably will do for a while :(

Might have to give Mo's a visit for the barmaids although I'll be with the wife!! lol
Ski Books - Fiction
Started by User in Ski Chatter, 5 Replies
With my love of skiing growing more each year I thought I'd keep the spirit of the ski season alive by reading some books on skiing.

I was looking to read fiction stories rather than books giving instruction or books about resorts.

These seem quite hard to find so I wanted to see if anyone had any books to reccommend?
I will also put my thoughts down for the benefit of others.

Cham - Jonathan Trigell.
Its a book about a guy working at the Chamonix resort and his escapades during the season. There's also a r*pist on the loose although the book only touches on this occasionally.
Not a bad book.

Avalanche - Jack Drummond
Book about a competition where a few select skiers and the highest bidder of a ticket get to race the El Diablo course. There are also fears for the conditions which could spell disaster for everyone in town. You get to know a lot of the characters in the book which adds to the flavour.
I loved this book and thought it one of the best I've read. I'd highly reccommend.

I've not really read that many biographies but I did read this one:
Unfinished Business - Alain Baxter
I did enjoy this and I found his story to be quite informative although I thought the story ended too soon and it'd be nice to have it updated to include recent seasons if possible.

I'm thinking of getting the Herman Maier story. Has anyone read it?

Although this is not

Ski Helmets?
Started by User in Ski Chatter, 93 Replies
Hi guys n girls,

I personally don't use a helmet at the moment although if I boarded rather than skied I reckon i'd get one ASAP.

Currently I stay mainly on piste although I have started to look at the areas alongside or between runs which I consider, baby off piste
When I go away next Feb (09) I'd also like to try some jumping at the fun park so I guess a helmet would be something I should look at purchasing.

A friend of mine (boarder) had a fall in Bulgaria where he went over and hit his head on black ice.
He spent 2.5 days in hospital with bad concussion and when he arrived home he was signed off for around 2 months with severe restrictions on what he could do, read, TV, play games etc.
Needless to say he now wears a helmet all of the time and would never board without it.

I think that most boarders fall on their front or back which makes this more likely to hit their heads.

Shame hats look cooler )
Drunk Skiers Beware!!
Started by Freezywater in Bulgaria, 13 Replies, discussing Chepelare and Pamporovo
I wonder how they would police this?

Is it a case of stopping people at random or more likely stopping those who appear drunk and out of control.
I guess to them it would be the same as seeing drunk people walking down the street.

Not a bad thing I suppose as I bet there're loads of accidents that happen with drunk skiers or boarders.

If so then how many new / bad skiers will get stopped.

That's a coincidence Leo, I went Obertauern this year and I'm off to mayrhofen next year!

Sounds depressing saying next year so I'll rephrase that to say I'm going Maryhofen this season :-)
