When would be the best skiing @ Fernie?

Question Pablo, Is that port of entry open all year round? Been a long time... I mean really long time... since I have been there. At that time they shut it down for the winter. I am curious cuz now you got my interest piqued for the trip I am planning next winter.

You have probably already done this, but if not, have your friends that live in the Bozeman area keep any eye open for any promotions that either Big Sky or Bridger Bowl may have for then. Sometimes they have ski shows where they offer lift tickets at a discount if you buy them in advance. We usually get one in our area in late summer every year.

I didn't see how many days you will be skiing but Big Sky has a lot of runs at every level. You could ski there multiple days & not get bored. Two days at Bridger is as long as I want to ski there. However from past experience the lift tickets were close to twice as much at Big Sky.

Big Sky is one of my favorite in Montana. Lots of high speed quads, lots of runs and hardly any lift lines.

Bridger is a nice mountain for taking a family to, especially if you have younger children. Not as expensive, a bit more low key. No high speed quads the last time I was there. Most of the lifts are older and tend to stop once in a while.

Also, you will not be that far from Red Lodge. It is about 60 miles south west of Billings. Total driving time from Bozeman would be in that 2.5-3 hour range. They have a nice sized, family friendly mountain with two high speed quads on the back side. Just check their snow reports before planning to drive there. Sometimes they get shorted on the snow.

Whitefish, aka Big Mountain would be quite a drive from Bozeman. Not sure on air service to that area. It is good sized and very uncrowded.

Sorry for bumping an older thread but I see you still have 10 months to plan... 8)

Yeah, melting away! Of course the only thing they call a ski hill here is nuttin more than a bump. Mostly I go out to Montana and hit Redlodge, Big Sky or Bridger. I think next winter I want to do a trip through ID, UT and CO. I could use a good ski vacation.

Not an expat Brit, but get a kick out of reading the posts on this forum.

Gota watch those jackalopes! Right mean critters.
I like your spirit Innsbrucker! However I am envious that you have a GF that can ski as well or better than you. Lucky man!

I try to expand my abilities by pushing a little past my comfort zone. I understand at some point I will have to begin to tone it down when my body no longer does what my mind tells it to do. My Dad says it will happen sooner or later, usually sooner.

I look at a fall when skiing as a learning experience. What did I do to cause that? and what will I do next time to avoid that? Having said that, during a fall/slide, my main two concerns are: 1) Keep my skis (toes, feet, knees, however you want to think about it) together and pointed in the same direction and 2) I dont want to be sliding head first! I would much rather go into any object leading with my ski boots than with my head, helmet or not.

Both your picture and Trencher's got me itchin to hit the slopes again

Innsbrucker, I should mention that the amount of time where your back on the snow is very short lived. It is part of the roll to get your feet down hill. Think modified tuck and roll, complicated by pesky skis and poles. First time I made it work (it wasnt planned) it sorta happend. I fell on a wide open blue run, kept the feet together as I tucked and rolled, ended up on my hip and dug the side of my ski into the slope. My Skis were perpendicular to the fall line and it popped me right back onto my feet! I wasn't going too terribly fast at that point. On an expert mogul run it gets trickier.
