Rental vs Bought Skis
Started by User in Ski Technique, 13 Replies
The skis were the usual length - from my feet to my eyes. They did have a rocker.

The hire shop said they were fine and that it was the first time they had been used. It wasn't the first time they had been used as I could see they had been used when I took them from the shop. So I didn't trust what the shop said. The shop was Intersport. I would like to think that hire shops would only rent out skis in good condition. But I don't know to what degree that is true.
Rental vs Bought Skis

Hi,

Have been skiing a few years and can ski ok - black runs with average sized moguls. I have always rented skis, and value the convenience compared to owning, servicing, storing and transporting my own skis. But maybe I need my own??

This year on my rental skis I experienced a new problem; this was a reduced ease in being able to scrub out speed, and needing a greater distance to come to a stop. I varied everything I could, ie edge angle, weight distribution and exertion of pressure. I found the problem in loose powder on piste, and that icing sugar kind of snow you often get on well scrubbed steep slopes.

I would like to think this new problem was due to my rental skis having blunt edges, rather than a change in my technique. However, the edges felt sharp to me, in that if I were to run my finger down them with moderate pressure, they would probably cut my finger. So to me they felt sharp - but I'm no expert and I don't know what they should feel like.

Any ideas?
Austria vs France

Hi,

A bit of an open question, but does Austria have anything to offer over and above France?

I have always skied in France, and usually drive there. I am curious to try Austria, but wondered if it had anything to offer over and above France?

My guess is that drive travel time/cost will be about the same. For cost of accommodation, ski hire and piste pass, is Austria any better? Are the pistes any different? I'm guessing food will be pretty similar?

Looking to carry drink, sandwich, spare layer, goggles and gloves, and also shovel and probe. From what I see, all ski backpacks cater for shovel and probe with a waterproof compartment.

Head Torch

Hi,

I need to get a head torch to attach to my helmet.

I am not a nerd/geek; I really do need one (for some runs I will have to do in the dark).

Any advice about what to get and not get?

I drove to Tignes for a week on my own this year. It was great and would do it again.
I live in London. I finished work a bit early on Friday, got the Eurotunnel and stayed overnight in Troyes. Arrived in Tignes on Saturday afternoon. Had 7 days skiing, stayig in Troyes again on Saturday night, catching the Eurotunnel Sunday lunchtime.

I had snow chains but didn't need to use them. I have a comfortable car, but wouldn't fancy the journey in an uncomfortable car.
Hi,

How do you view this in Google Maps?

I've just tried (for Espace Killy). I couldn't see any options to enable the display of the pistes. I tried in Internet Explorer and Firefox.

Thanks.
