Skiing in April!!!???

For those seeking high altitude and a 'get away from it all' location - how about Arolla? Located at the end of a valley past Evolene & Les Hauderes, and only reachable by car/bus you have some large open wide pistes, but the variety is not that great.

Could make a nice day excusrion from Verbier or Crans.

When did you start skiing

1964 - when I was three years old. In those days it was all wooden skis and leather lace up ski boots and bamboo poles.

I was born in the mountains in January three years prior - and my mother was skiing two days before I was born (I was born 2 weeks early - for some *unfathomable* reason!!!!).

I've been back to the resort nearly every single year since 1961.

And Meercat's 'tip of the day'....... when teaching somebody to ski, by all means tell them how to do it.... but when you get them to do it - get them to follow you - pretty close - and just up the speed so that they need to put the right effort into staying up with you. Also, keep an eye on them. It shows you care - and it also means that they're under obligation to do what you said.

And then when you have a group of novice skiers all learning - line them up *across* a gentle slope and then tell them to all ski down at the same time doing identical carved turns in time with eachother. Oh what fun that is. :o)))

Just another thing to note.

If you're hiring your car in Germany - and taking it to Austria - check that this is allowed and that they give you a 'Vehicle on hire' certificate and breakdown cover for Austria.

If the car does not have chains - beware. I've tried to get away with this an ended up buying chains for a 'one off' use - to make it the last 5km to the resort. (Money making scam they have - a soon as they can get away with it - they stop all non 4x4 cars and insist they have chains.... and you can be sure they'll have somebody there selling them.)
buying boots.....here or in resort?

Of course - the one major major advantage of buying boots in the UK (ie. Before you go) is that you can wear them in, and if you're not entirely happy with them - take them back for adjustment. That way you don't eat into valuable skiing time.

Also, it's a form of exercise. Wearing ski boots to do the hoovering and dusting brings a new dimension to housework that has added benefits.

Unless you live in an upstairs flat. In which case your neighbours will not share your opinion.

This might help.....

The UK Met Office predicts slightly above normal temperatures in much of Europe, with the exception of some eastern parts of Europe where the odds are evenly balanced. Precipitation is also evenly balanced.

In general though it will be a lot less mild than the winter of 2006/2007 - which is a relief!!!!
