8) Ade - this must be you !!!! it is snowing and snowing - we have 2.9 on top and that is without the new stuff- Have faith- last year, when it was warm and sunny and everywhere - M Alm, Zell,Kaprun,Kitzbuhel,- just about the whole area in this region closed very early in late March/early April LEOGANG stayed open until the 28th April and we skied it to middle station on the day.
You know I would not tell porkys !!! did 50km on Friday - we will take you- and to the Goatstall too if you want - thats what we here for - to make u a happy chappy. Hope the wrist is better now.See you soon - Guess who
8) The train ticket will be easily purchased in Salzburg. If there is more than 1 person and no more than 5 you can get a €28 Einfach Raus ticket, this is a return ticket if used on the same day , but even if you only use it one way for up to 5 people it is still good value. You do not need to book a ticket it is most unlikely that it would be full. If you go back to the obb web site there is a number you can call from Austria it is 051717 you caould try this with 0043 in front .You can not use the Einfach Raus ticket if there is only 1 person - silly I know hope this helps

Yes it was painfull, but it only took me 6 weeks before I could get back to ski a little on the glacier in Kaprun, just to test it out. I skied with the knee brace and it was OK, although a bit weak. That was a couple of years ago.
Its fine now - In fact just had the best day skiing today in Leogang, the snow was amazing and the slopes empty - apart from about 200 English school kids being bussed in from other resorts that have closed earlier than expected. Deep joy.

Like you I thought I was going really fast !! and like you the reality was a different matter. Unlike you however I was so excited to see my time, I looked up to see the clock, lost concentration and fell over.
Real pain - but as you will remember you then have to go up a lift to ski down etc etc. So to the hospital next day - 40% tear on cruciate ligament - ouch nad a rubbish time too.
Doing it differently

For best value re ski pass look at Supersalzburg ski pass - so many places to choose from.
Remember winter tyres are law in Austria , and doing some driving around snow chains are a good idea too.
Also think on that many places only like to sell Sat to Sat as it maximises the occupancy.
Have a nice time !
Although the Kitzsteinhorn glacier is open in summer, they do sometimes shut the lift for revision work and maintenance possibly for 2 weeks. You can check this out at www.kitzsteinhorn.at , or phone the tourist info in Kaprun.Having said that the conditions also dictate if it is open and last year , there was a brief shutdown due to lack of snow and cracks in the glacier. The idea of summer skiing is great but it is usually very limited and restricted to a small area, with long drag lifts. We have experienced a very warm spring , and although the skiing is fab at the moment summer might be a different matter.
I would suggest a car rental , as if you want to get up to the glacier the bus timetable in summer is very limited . I have a contact for a very reasonable company if you want to contact me. It will then be easier to get around the whole area, for sightseeing and also the water based activites such as rafting ,canyoning etc are either at Lofer or Taxenbach and to make it all a lot easier and cheaper you would need the car to get there.
Once you have a car - where to stay becomes less important.
Zell am See can be very busy in summer, but the lake is nice with designated swimming pool areas, and a 12 km walk or cycle path around it.
I live in Leogang, close to Zell am See/Kaprun.Our village is famous for the Bike Park - host to The World Mountain bike championships and also the World and Euopean cup. We have fantastic cycle paths suitable for families and the Bike Park for serious stuff. I am sure if you look at the tourist info web site you will find some interesting ideas- www.alpinworld.at - especially read up about the Lowen Card which will save you a lot of money as a family ( compared to staying at Zell or Kaprun).
There is a Sailing/Kayaking school on the lake in Zell which offers the kids courses in both activities.
If you want more detailed info about anything mentioned please do send me a private message and i will be only too pleased to help. :)
