That age old insurance question
Started by User in Ski Chatter, 14 Replies
The important issue with travel insurance is often not who you buy it from but who underwrites it, in other words the insurer behind it. Direct Travel act almost as a sales arm/broker.

In this case it appears to be Chartis, who are effectively AIG who were the biggest insurer in the world before they went belly up during the recent world financial meltdown, but they now trade as Chartis in Europe but are a large company and well respected.

I would expect when you ring the claims number you will be spoken to by Chartis claims handlers, rather than anyone from Direct Travel, why dont you give them a ring on the claims number and see if you can ask them who handles the claims and what their procedures are if you're concerned, at the end of the day thats what you pay for.

24 sleeps going to Livigno on 15th Feb :))
I hope all goes well for you SnowLily but just a general word of caution about T's&C's and claims being knocked back.

As a fairly experienced chap in the insurance world, although not necessary with travel insurance, it is fair to say the way insurance is handled has changed over the years. More often that not with domestic insurance inc travel etc, you will only deal with a telesales or non-insurance experienced person, i.e. not the underwriter or the decision maker.

So my advice, if you think you have been wronged, is not to take no for an answer and follow their complaints procedure. Good luck.

Livigno in a 3rd week of March?

Came back from Livigno last week. Snow was good, and it was colder than usual so they were making loads more. Some exposed parts had snow blown away by winds but all pistes were excellent and all lifts open. Nursery slopes are no problem at all, loads of snow. I am sure it will be fine in March.

...the pizzas are great too, and leave some space for duty free alcohol :)
