I'll be coming off of a cruise ship in Venice the 3rd week of April. Does anyone know of any reliable skiing/snow near Venice in April?

You shouldn't buy ski's just on recommendations from others.
You have to actually try them on the snow to see which works best for your ability and terrain. All the skis that I own were demos that I actually skied on, liked and then bought cheap. Bariloche has many ski shops where you can demo skis and then buy them afterwards and have the price of the rental applied to the purchase price. The best time to do that would be at the end of August near the end of the season in Argentina. The ski shops are always willing to unload their current stock of skis to make room for next years models. Ski's are not much of a bargain in Europe given the strength of the Euro against the US Dollar and especially against the Argentinian Peso. Also, if you travel by air with the skis outside of the ski season in Europe, you may get hit with an oversize baggage charge which averages 75 euros now. Customs is also very strict in Buenos Aires and you may get hit with a duty charge on expensive, new skis. Good luck. I'll be in Bariloche in June. |

Just got back from there on Monday. I ripped up the bases of my skis on rocks. I wouldn't bring new skis there at this time. Rent instead and let the shop repair the bases after you're done.
