Had loads of brochures, including some from various resort tourist offices, landing on my doormat over the last week or so - and have been drawn for some reason to Grindelwald, Wengen and Murren.
Have never been there before and would really appreciate any brief tips, ideas, views or suggestions. One factor is the ability to book indpendently, and the hotels seem to accept unusual bookings, ie not Sat to sat or Sun to Sun only. Also like what looks like the easy rail trip from Zurich via Interlaken. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. |

I like this forum... fun, friendly and informative!
The only thing I don't like is the obsession with Niederau! (only joking lads!!!) |

Winter must be approaching as I've started looking at J2Ski again!
I am a confirmed fan of Swiss ski-ing but I'm not sure that you can replicate the US experience in Switzerland - or too many other places in Europe for that matter! I very much like Saas Fee, but it's not the most convenient resort in the world and it does close down quite often due to stormy weather with not much alternative. Engelberg is another favourite but lacks Alpine charm and the ski-ing again is not terribly convenient. How about another of my faves, Arosa? Easy to get to from Zurich by train, small-ish ski area (lots of runs served off a few lifts so quite American in that way!), attractive village but with mainly good quality hotel accommodation. |

Do I detect these 'ratings' as being North American, by any chance?
How can Kitzbuhel, which has much to commend it, be considered the 'Pearl of the Alps'? Beautiful, it is not! I could go on about some of the others, but I can't be bothered! ) |

Good luck with the magazine project - I say that as a skier and a journalist. In the 70s/80s, there used to be three main ski titles in the UK - the Ski Club of Great Britain mag (now called Ski and Board), Skiing UK and the British Ski magazine. Neither of the last two survived once the Daily Mail launched its magazine. The trouble with all of them is that they are/were filled with articles on heli trips to Greenland, Russia and Kazakstan. They are elitist, not aspirational. Most two-weeks-a-year skiers/boarders are more interested in what ski-ng in Mayrhofen, La Plagne, Cortina, Saas Fee and Whistler etc is like. The back country epics remain out of reach for an awful lot of customers. I would like to read a mag with a more recreational, down to earth content. |

Good call...Les Menuires is the ugliest of the the Trois Vallees ski stations, but the most under-rated.
The uncrowded, top-quality ski-ing in the La Masse areas is magnificent! :) |

Big questions not suited to short replies, I'm afraid!
How about Andorra for your trip? Relatively cheap and top quality English-native-speaking ski schools. The web is a fantastic resource for your tour operator/equipment needs. Why not start at skiclub.co.uk If you ignore the over-optimistic snow reporting, the site has a shedload of information and advice for first-timers. Good luck. |
