Scott

I have travelled on many, many 'single' trips over many years - and I think you are best trying Switzerland or Italy where single rooms are pretty much available at little or no supplement in an awful lot of hotels.

In France, they are almost non-existant in hotels, a few chalets have them, but this usually means the dreaded single supplement.

My preference these days is for Switzerland and I have booked through the resort websites; efficient, available in English and you get instant confirmation. Use the very efficient rail system from Zurich or Geneva to cut down on transfer costs from the airport - and have a good time!!!
Saas Fee Ski Rental

Any of those which are close to the slopes/lifts - Saas Fee is a straggling village spread out over a huge area. If you use a shop too far away you are faced with a big hike to the slopes/lifts.

Those close by usually include a ski/boots depot in the price.

Looked at the webcams from Engelberg today - and was delighted to see people with skis going up the Rotair cable car.

This must mean winter is almost here.....!
Certainly inferred that winter rules would apply - if they have ski-ing available, of course.
Cairngorm officials talking earlier in the week about possibly having something open for the October half-term.
Helmets

After 25 years of wearing a ski hat or cap I, too, was worried about the 'looking like a cock' factor.

Now after five years of wearing a helmet, it feels normal (and in Canada you'd feel abnormal without one, it would appear) and I have avoided a few stitches at least by wearing one.

You might think you're the safest. steadiest thing on the slopes, but you can't legislate for the other idiots!

Thank you gentlemen.

I agree, AJ, that the railway station at Zurich airport is a fantastic boon to quick transfers.

Jim, the resort sounds just up my alley - and a trip in January looks on the cards.

Any more tips always appreciated!

Really horrible title!

And the concept of producing a page-turning online magazine has been somewhat discredited. Too time consuming and difficult to read in many cases.

All in all, not very inspiring!
