Hi,
We went to Borovets last year and struggled majorly with the snow. flew out for a week on the 9th Jan. I believe the rest of the season was a bit better but we also went to Andorra at the end of the season and that was awesome!
There seemed to be far less snow making facilities in Borovets and weather was random! 15c displayed on the rila on our first day!
Saying that snow looks good there at the moment

snow making around the clock and some snow in the air.
Borovets was great overall and I would go back tomorrow. Make sure you pay a visit to white magic and have a drink with Christov. Great guy, ex olympic skier. spent an hour with him and didnt stop laughing.
Have a great time,
Matt

Lots of snow right now in Bulgaria but not sure about end of January. Depends what temp would be. If it is 20 degrees as it was in the beginning of December ...
They have some snow cannons in Borovec. Look at the maps. They are in Bulgarian but the snowflakes are for snow cannons :)

My favourite runs there are Yastrebec and Popangelov.

I'm not entirely sure how you can have an opinion of a resort without going there...

I have however been to Borovets a couple of times, and thoroughly enjoyed it on both occasions; we went early Feb both times. Granted, 2008 conditions were better as it had snowed most of the day and night before we got there, but the following year was fine. Some of the lower slopes were iffy, but on the whole, it was very good.

There is one run in particular (blue, I can't remember the name) that takes you through the woods, and twists and turns all the way down to the resort, it was fantastic…

There are very few snow sure resorts in Europe, and if a budget trip is what you're after, Bulgaria has to be top of the list.

I think you can that is why you have forums like J2ski to get information,if you look back on threads there are people who have been and have possibly enjoyed their holidays but would not go back for various reasons.
No one is criticising your choice but I also have a choice and that is I have never fancied skiing Bulgaria.

matt dont worry you will have plenty of snow when you get there.
ive been to borovets loads of times, but usually late feb/early march as a last trip of the season with all the lads and when the snow is at its best but historically late jan is okay. the resort itself is pretty basic but theres plenty of lively bars and places to eat...and its cheap, no way as cheap as it used to be though. the ski area aint massive but enough to keep you busy, unless youre one of those that refuse to ski the same piste twice.

for future ref, check out resorts on the milky way as you'll find some cheap deals if you dont mind roughing it a bit.
