There seems to be a lot of people in a similar position to Jenno this year, in as much as the people they normally go with have had to give it a miss this season. We've got more new skiers coming with us this year than ever. We always get the odd single skier or two joining us, this year we've got several.
It's great for our club as they more often than not become regulars.

I manage a solo, (or two!) every year. Always go back to Niederau. You are right that you get to know the staff, locals, instructors, and many guests. Most of the tourists don't know where the really good off piste skiing is, and you ain't gonna tell them!
Because you know the runs, you get more skiing in.
It saves a lot of time that you know where places, good music, etc are, and so, you can pack in more action. And the more that you get to know a place, the better is your cost/value.
That's the same for Tony in Mahrhofen, Ian in LGB, Bandit in Grimland, and others.

Totally agree with all DaveMac has said.
I've gone solo a couple of times (meeting family a few days later) to Mayrhofen. Because I know the people and places etc so well, I can very quickly settle and enjoy the hoiday to the full, knowing where to go to see which people for a chat or a drink. If I tried it elsewhere I could imagine a somewhat lonely and unrewarding experience.

I go it alone frequently. I'd just make sure your aware of where your at. Just have funJenno wrote:Hello people, can I have your thoughts on the following please:
This season coming up my loving wife has given me permission to go off skiing for a week whilst leaving her at home looking after the brood (we all went last year but financial restraints have meant calling off another family skiing trip till 2011). However my 2 skiing friends , (who are of similar intermediate standard) have decided this is the year they CAN'T go, one having jacked work in to go back to Uni as a mature student and the other one too tied up with work (have you ever heard such a thing?! ) ')
So it looks like for now I may well be travelling alone which I don't have a problem with at all but the questions are:
1) Do I return to a resort where I 'know the ropes' i.e. Kirchberg/Kitzbuhel/Niederau and where I know ski school staff, bar staff (at least if they haven't changed!), ski hire shops and the resorts in general etc
2) Just go somewhere new in any case
3) Just wait until last minute deals are out there (can't go Jan. needs to be Feb or Mar) and way up the costs against likeability of resorts
4) None of the above or a mixture of the above!
Thanks!
Uh oh, I think I broke'd the lift

Thanks for all the replies and useful advice guys. At the moment I'm probably leaning towards a last minute deal back to Niederau, cue hearing Tony groan in the background ) but am more than happy to spend a week back in ski school there to hone technique and skill etc and then that obviously helps with meeting up with people of a similar standard and then with knowing a few other people about the place it would fit the bill nicely. If I can get a good week in of drills and the like on the limited pistes there (maybe head over to Auffach for a day or two) then that will set me up nicely for future ski hols where I can abandon ski school full stop and tackle unheralded km's of challenging pistes ... :)
I decided to have a life change and be more spontaneous. Starting tomorrow.
