I always get insurance through the Austrian Apline Club UK which basically cover you for all types of activities. Also good way to give a little back to the wider community - funding huts and expeditions.

When in EU EHIC card's a necessity. At least last year in Austria it was the first thing ambulance drivers asked for when transferring my daughter from a resort private facility to a nearby private hospital and from there to a state one.It was actually a doctor in the private clinic who strongly recommend to check with the insurance providers if the private treatment is covered as he had had many cases involving UK skiers where the insurers didn't cover the costs and the people were not aware of it. And of course, our insurers said that the cover didn't include the costs of a surgery in a private hospital when there's an alternative for getting treatment in a state facility. Again, in the state hospital first thing was to show EHIC card. Needless to say that the state hospital in Schladming was absolutely brilliant with the surgeons experienced in dealing with wintersports injuries. Insurance covered the initial assessment in the private resort clinic and initial treatment in the private hospital nearby, new flights, taxi to airport and overnight airport hotel and daily allowance. Therefore valid travel/wintersports insurance was more than necessary. Insurers settled everything without any fuss or delay...they've gone out of business now :)

Good advice, Flat Country Skier. So you're saying, if I understand correctly, that your insurance will cover you for immediate need in a private clinic if that is what is immediately available, but that as soon as possible afterwards you should seek ongoing treatment via the public system ?

Billip, I couldn't confirm this as it would depend on the
T&C of your insurance cover.
