I would argue that Austria offers the best value for money. I bought an investment apartment 2 years ago in Schladming, coming to about 5% net yield and I get to use it for free about 6 weeks per year.

A bit like Nurick - I have my house in Niederau which has pretty crap local runs so my default is always the car to someplace with decent skiing. But it is nice on the odd day to stay local if you just want to do an hour and then have a beer/food etc without driving. So also consider a small cheapo resort BUT with decent drivable skiing.

My grand parents have an apartment in Praz de Lys (not far from Les Gets).
I'd recommend:
Having an apartment that has a good place to store your gear (skis, snowboard etc).
Close to a piste
Close to a restaurant
Close to a shop

That's all you need.
