I have spent the last two New Years in Obertauern and I will be there with my wife and Daughter again this year. I really like the resort. The skiing is good. The mountain restaurants are really good. Apres ski is fun. Most Hotels there are really good quality.

While the village in Soll is very low - something like 700masl, the skiing is mainly between about 1200m and 1600m. The Skiwelt has some of the best piste management anywhere and I would be surprised if you did not have decent enough pistes to ski on.

Even if natural snow is scarce, the worst that will happen is that the runs to resort might be a bit ropey but this can simply be averted by taking the gondola down .

For some reason, people hate doing this but for me a better option is to ski a bit longer up high in enjoyable conditions and then take the gondola down. The alternative is ski down the resort runs when they can be in poor condition, often alternating between ice and deep slush, and over-crowded in the late afternoon as lots of people struggle to get home safely :x

I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to SkiWelt last year. As Wanderer says, the piste management and snow making in SkiWelt is superb. Given that the area opens early December I'd be surprised if there wasn't enough skiing in late December, even if the runs back to resort are white strips on green fields.

My daughter has asked if there be snow at village level in Soll , Can I safely assume there will not be any at that time of year because of the resort height ?

Tonypants, no. There may be snow at resort level, there may not. I think that there was in SkiWelt last year in early December, but not later in December.

Most likely there will be some snow though the quality may not be great. There is a small slope at village level where complete beginners take their first ginger steps onto the snow. Most of the skiing is higher up.

I've been going there for the odd day's skiing for years. It's a soulless place with none of the charm of most Austrian resorts - it's more like France, but the snow is pretty reliable. It's also not exactly huge: a competent intermediate can easily do it all in a day. Not much very challenging stuff, and mostly easily reds and blues. I wouldn't contemplate it for a whole week: you'll be bored after day 2. Have a look at Schladming instead which is much more extensive and with more varied terrain.

Well I ended completely off track , only because of a deal Mrs P found with Mark Warner.
Now booked to go to Courmayeur on New Year's Eve , never been there before ( never skied In Italy before).
Any good ? I know it's not a huge ski field but opportunities to Cham or La Thuile etc.
