One minor point re. the off-piste; it's not so much boulders that are an issue with thin snow cover, but mahoosive great holes as the base rock is limestone with caves and crevices galore. It's definitely not a place for ducking barriers in marginal snow.

Thankfully, though, the snow record's pretty good and if anywhere in the area has snow then Flaine will.

Great place to ski.

Was there last year for the first time. Easy to navigate and can't get lost. Tip: stay away from those upper 10+ km runs: they are quite flat and you'll find yourself using your poles instead of skiing. Quite tiring. Enjoy.

We were in Flaine in Jan 17 and it was really great. I personally liked the architecture. The skiing area in the bowl is very good and we did not spend enough time venturing out into the connected areas which I regret. We were self catering in the deos apts in the top half of the resort so we used the spar a lot. The hot prepared food in the deli is really good and best value to be had. There is also a great restaurant on the lower arcade called the gran de sal which we made repeat visits to.Yes off piste is very popular but the number of helicopter lifts daily would suggest it is risky and we stuck to the piste never feeling out of our depth. Fairly quick trasfer. All in all very good and would return at the drop of a hat.

Stayed there a couple of times and also Morillion. Had an apartment just above the central area and once we'd done a few lunchtimes on the balcony, realised why the ambulances and helicopter are nearby. The central crossroads seems quite benign, but we saw lots of slow-motion collisions. Pretty much a serious-looking one every lunchtime! Albeit it was a busy week.

So just be aware: having skiied some of the difficult upper slopes or trekked around to Morillion etc. don't relax too much as you come into the base are in the centre and keep alert. Lots of people going across in different directions.
