If it is any guide, the FIS season kicks off in Soelden (Austria) towards the end of October each year, and I'm pretty sure they have skied on the published dates for the past few seasons.

was recently in Hintertux now in May, and there was a lot of powder above 2500m up to top at 3200m. I also spoke with a local, and apparently the same snow conditions are also from October - November. So this seems like a great place for early and late skiing. plus the resort is basically open 365 days. I've seen people going and having great snow also in July and August.

Indoor slopes. You can ski early (or even very early) season and might even be lucky with some snow but IMHO it's not worth heading out with a purpose of skiing unless you live nearby, or have some other business in the area (and your company is paying your tickets).
