To avoid paying the motorway toll these days you MUST come off at Kiefersfelden (the border) - if you miss that you will get a nasty fine. Or just buy an annual pass for €86,40

I actually always purchase the Tirol Snow card because I usually also go south to Hochfügen and Zillertal for a few days and that is not on the Kitzbühel pass.

Auffach is only 10 mins from Niederau in the valley and connects to Alpbach these days so that will keep most people quiet for a day or two.

Auffach, now that is a place I must go! :) But childishness aside, that is a great point about the toll. So, as long as I don't cross the border while on the motorway, I won't need to pay anything to enter Austria, correct? By the looks of it, getting off at Kiefersfelden only adds another 15 extra minutes to the trip...

Kiefersfelden adds less than 10 minutes if no traffic. Yes it's very simple - just come off at Kiefersfelden and don't drive on any Austrian motorways after that and you are good to go.

Until 3 years ago you were allowed to drive off at Kufstein Süd but that changed and became a huge political punch-up.

Last two winters, I got off at Kiefersfelden OK, but on the return journey, couldn't get the route either year. Guess I need to work on this.

When you come out of Wörgl at the roundabout you DON'T take the motorway turning (left) but go to the next small roundabout and THEN turn left.......that leads you all the way down to central Kufstein.

Once in Kufstein you turn left at the roundabout with rusty sculptures and that runs you parallel to the motorway.....until you get the sign that leads you BACK onto the German side of the Autobahn.

Late to the party, but I was just in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and can confirm Munich_johnny's first two replies are on point.

The biggest problem with Garmisch is getting to the ski areas, especially if you don't have a car. Getting up to the Zugspitze is 1h30m, one way, and it's not the most amazing skiing.

You can duck across the border to the charming little village of Lermoos, Austria, and the improved organization and atmosphere is immediately evident. The views from their area are also stunning.
