For 9 - 12 January, you would not consider booking until quite late in the year. It is a low cost high season point, with lots of accommodation. That is not to say that you don't do your homework. Get some preferred areas, based on snow history. Prices in Austria are at their lowest that week. (talking main season).

I am always in Austria starting within that week, never less than great.

Cheap package? Andorra or Bulgaria
Cheap while you are there? Both of the above, and most of Austria or Italy

Have a look at Mayrhofen in Austria and Sauze d'Oulx in Italy - both tend to offer cheap packages, both are cheap when you are there, both have short transfers, both have masses of skiing and variety, both have lively nightlife as well if you want it.

You could try a certain other resort in Austria championed by a small select band on here, but you can't ski top to bottom on a blue, and I wouldn't possibly want to advise you to go somewhere beyond your capabilities...... ;-)

I'd second Sauze, much cheaper than France and plenty of mischief at night time if that's your thing!
Beware of the cheap deal though. We went to Les Arcs that week a couple of years ago and got a self catered apartment package for just €329. We were delighted but then the lift pass for the week was €280 and a pint was about €8 in most places so we spent a fortune that week. Another factor is that if you are looking for nightlife, that week is very quiet in most resorts.
To be honest though that week in January is probably the cheapest week for most tour operators so have a good look around but Austrian and Italian resorts are usually much cheaper than France.
When in doubt?....Flat out.

Well, because I have a big cost winter, (the big costs are France and Colorado), my January Austria trip is low cost. Free flight, with airmiles, but would have cost around £80. Train/taxi or car hire, €94/£61 or £110. My room cost €190/£64. Total £205. Add evening meals about £10/night, Total £275.

Plus coffees/drinks.

Price of drinks and food in both Maxyrhofen and Sauze is cheap for ski resorts in the main. Expect to pay 3,50-4,50 for a large beer in either.
