Enjoying watching the snow fall and fall in Tahoe, Kirkwood etc on the various webcams!!
Not looking risky at the moment! Loads of snow fallen in November and December. Some snow forecast every day this week. 27 out of 29 lifts running at Heavenly. Most of the mountain open ahead of schedule. Looking forward to being there in January. -)
Seems the 'risk' is being steadily reduced - 36inches of new snow in the last 24 hours at Heavenly! :D

Stay in Park City. 40 minutes from SCl airport. 6 world class mountains within 50 minutes any one of which could keep you busy for a week.

I'm only adding this comment because you mentioned "Hidden Gems". Well yeah, there's lots of them. Is your group willing to forgo big market resorts with all the imedities for the more rustic small market hills that are known for big vertical and massive terrain (okay, not European Massive, or vertical either I suppose). There are a handful in Montana, WhiteFish (2353 Vert. Ft. / 3020 skiable acres) , Showdown (1400 vertical foot with 640 skiable acres). Stones throw across the boarder Castle Mountain resort with 2833 Vert. ft. and 3500 skiable acres. An hours drive from Castle Is Fernie (3550 Vert. Ft an 2500 skiable acres).
Two of my examples are in Canada, but our dollar is in the toilet(1USD = 1.33CDN), so you might want to save some money and go north.
The small market resorts are usually where the locals choose to go. I live a 3 hour drive from Sunshine and Lake Louise but choose the Castle and Fernie every time for Price, parking, and yes, better terrain. WAY FEWER PEOPLE !
Hidden Gems are worth finding.
And , yeah , If you want News Years accommodation, you might already be too late.
